For the last 13 months I have been suffering from the following symptoms. I have them only on my hands on the inner side. No other part of my body has the same problem. My hands (inner-side)are itchy and scaly. It is extremly dry. I have been treated with many cortizon ointments and a couple of antibiotics to no avail. Right now I am going through so much allergy testing. My doctor chose not to do a culture of my hands since he believes that it will only indicate that I am allergic to something however, it will not tell me what I am allergic to. I researched this subject on the web and found that I have symptoms of both atopic as well as contact dermatitis. My itching gets worse when my hands get very dry. I use lots of lotion (mainly lubriderm or Vaseline) I wear gloves (cotton - hypoallergenic ones) at night when I go to bed or during the day on weekends. I wear lined Playtex gloves to do dishes and other cleaning. The dryness leads to skin pealing and more itching which in turn leads to deep cuts. I wrap these cuts with neosporin and bandaid to no avail. I have tried everything, soaking them in a warm water, wrapping them in a wet towel, putting lotion on them and then putting on gloves, etc. Nothing works. The relief is very temporary and it comes right back. Some of my allergy tests indicated, I am allergic to cats, grass and some type of trees. I don't have a cat, there's grass everywhere and the trees that I am allergic to are pretty much everywhere also. My allergist does not believe the above mentioned allergens cause my hand problem. My dermatologist is treating my hand and believes that we are still not at wits end, there is still more that can be done. I am tired of the pain. I cannot open doors, cook, clean or do anything because the smallest thing causes my hand to get raw or bleed. I still lead a normal life but I am learning to build my tolerance for pain. Is there anything that can be done for me? Please help. |

Hi ak,
Have you followed GM's advice? I would and quickly. Try not to wash your hands and use plenty of the wheatgerm oil - this will ease the pain. Speaking as someone who has suffered hands like yours - the thought occurs to me - do you handle flowers at all - I got my sore hands from the leaves and sap of chrysanthemums and the sap from daffodils - it's terrible stuff. There are also many plants which can give terrible skin condition from handling them - usually the sap but also the leaves. So have a think about what you do and where you go etc. You might discover something interesting. Hope your homeopathic treatment from GM clears it up. Thinking about you.

Hi,
sorry about the screw up with the previous message. Morag, thanks for enquiring about me. No, I do not deal with flowers, however I do have a lot of indoor plants. None of these plants have sap coming out. I do not really do much with them except to cut the old leaves and water them once a week. I have not had a chance to buy what GM has suggested however, I will do so in a day or two. Thanks again for replying, I hope your hands are okay now.

GM,
You had suggested I take Sulphur. I have never tried homeopathy therefore I have some very basic questions. Please be patient with me and answer them for me. Where will I find sulphur and wheat germ oil? Will I get them at a Vitamin place? Secondly, my husband and I are planning a family, would it be safe for me to take sulphur? Also, my recent patch allergy testing indicated that I am allergic to Balsum of Peru and Nickel Sulphate. Do you know what they are called locally and where would they generally be found? I looked at all of my soaps, shampoos, washing liquid, nail polish, etc... nothing seems to have them. However, I have noticed when I wash my hands or clean the house or do dishes, laundry, etc, my skin gets aggravated therefore, I have always used gloves. I have cut off nearly everything, and I still have this problem and I am not sure what is it that I am touching on a day to-day basis. These are my day-to-day list of things I touch on an average: 1. Dove/Caress soap 2. Pantene shampoo 3. handwashing soap - sauve 4. Dog food, our food, spices (Indian) 5. Tissues - toilet and facial and paper towel 6. Water- I avoid as much as possible but can't always. 7. Acid Mantle lotion, Almond Oil 8. A little bit of coconut oil once in a while for the scalp to keep it moist. 9. Lubriderm lotion for the body 10. Shoes, clothing, 11. DOG - I pet and play with her My allergy tests showed that I am not allergic to her. 12. My husband - just kidding!!! I love him very much.13. Sometimes dryer sheets while doing laundry. 14. paper, computer, supplies - like pens, pencils, etc. 15. My car and the steering wheel is leather 16. Latex but layered gloves to do dishes and cleaning. 17. Cotton gloves for the night That pretty much covers everything. What could I be allergic too. Please help. ![]() thanks again and I will follow your advice soon after I hear from you.

Hi ak,
Your plants - without looking up my books - Primula Obconica is one that springs to mind - very pretty pink shades of flowers - the leaves are lethal to the skin of even the most hardened gardeners - so wear gloves when doing all your plants. Wheatgerm oil you will get at any healthfood shop or chemist (drugstore?) And as GM said - Freemans are very good, quick and helpful www.freechem.co.uk - all the remedies are listed and you can order straight away. My hands are fine now - but I am now very careful - I never put my hands in anything. This might help you - I have a pair of the old fashioned wooden washing tongs (the kind they used to use to take the washing out of the boiler) You can still buy them here so maybe you have them in the States too? I use them for all sorts of things. Hoping your hands soon heal.

Ak,
Reading your post, I just thought of 2 things. For your hands, a quick fix while you are waiting for the remedy to work is Gloves in a Bottle. It goes on like a lotion, is clear, but forms a barrier on your skin. It has eliminated the eczema from my skin. I do a lot of housework and don't like to use gloves, so this has worked beautifully. You can get it at any Sally Beauty Supply, Home Depot, most gardening stores, or you can buy it on line at http://www.glovesinabottle.com Also, in the USA, I order my remedies through mail order at Santa Monica Homeopathic Pharmacy. They use all different manufacturers like Boiron to Dolisos, but I usually receive it within 3 days. Their phone number is 1-310-395-1131 and they are open Saturdays too. EMR |
