“STUDIES ON THE EPIDEMIOLOGY OF NEMATODE PARASITES OF
EQUINES AND COMPARATIVE EFFICACY OF ANTHELMINTICS"

SUMMARY

To find out the prevalence and identification of nematode parasites in Tonga ponies, 15 animals were examined randomly at fortnightly. interval during one year of study. The investigations were based on coprological examination for the presence of Eggs per gram of faeces, identification of eggs and larvae. During the year 2003, in July 30%, August 34%, September 37.77%, October 25.55%, November 34.44% and December 31.11 % horses were affected with endoparasites. During the year 2004, in January 45%, February 36.67%, March 46.67%, April 40%, May 51.67% and June 41.67% horses were affected with endoparasites. Overall 37.87% of the total horses were found positive for endoparasites. A total of 181 out of 360 (50.27%) horses harboured Strongylus species. Larval cultures were studied for identification. It was found that amongst the Strongylus species 97 (53.70%) comprised of S. vulgaris, 32 (17.52%) S. edentatus and 52 (28.77%) comprised of S. equinus.

Comparative efficacy of 4 anthelmintics was assessed in different parasitized groups of horses. The efficacy of the drug was based on percent reduction in EPG counts. The Anthelmintic Oxfendazole showed 99.7% efficacy, Ivermectin showed 100% efficacy and Trematox was found to be 908.96% effective. Hence it was found that Ivermectin was the best of the three where as Oxfendazole had been placed at no.2 and Homoeopathic drug “T” at no.3 in terms of efficacy. No resistCl9-ce against the drugs could be noted.
