Default Excess salivation in cats

My Maine coon cat has always drooled just a little bit when he's very happy and being petted. Now, all of a sudden, he's drooling excessively, e.g. when he sleeps. His mouth and gums don't *look* sore (to the naked eye), and he is eating normally. Any thoughts?
