Default Fresh goats loosing hair

Hello Wim
I have two or three of my goats that are loosing hair on their ears after kidding. My friend say "We think that the hair loss is usually copper deficiency, zinc deficiency, or zinc deficiency secondary to (caused by) copper deficiency--they are synergistic, and zinc is not absorbed well with too little copper."

Do you think I should treat with copper bolus (which is a custom here in New England) or do you have another suggestion.?
thanks so much
we have been doing well with our kiddings (newer pictures coming soon)

Hello Carlene,

Many vitamin or mineral deficiences can cause hairloss, e.g. copper, zinc, iodine, etc.

Best would be to give tablets containing everything the goats need, such as Kirkland tablets or similar tablets. They also contain copper, zinc, etc.

Always check the product description if they are the right tablets, because there are different kinds.

Please see :

Give 2 tablets a day for a few days and thereafter 1 tablet a day.

hi
We have goats for many years. A certain hairloss after kidding is normal also giving the time of the year, where they change to their summer coat.
We use a mineral lick rather than tablets, as you can alos overdose. In the local farmstore you get good mineral licks for sheep lambing, or cows calfing.
Godd luck with the goats.

Mineral lick......good idea.....we use them for our horses, but not for our goats, although they are available for goats as well.

Always make sure the mineral lick contains all the necessary supplements. (Goat keepers can`t always tell though what`s exactly in the lick.)

When using tablets, however, we know exactly how much of each vitamin/mineral each individual goat gets.

Advantage of using (high quality) mineral licks is that the goats will only use them when their bodies tell them their body is lacking in something and if one has many goats the dosing is far easier of course.

Carlene.....talking about licking......I read about the lick granuloma in your dog......if your dog is suffering from tension/stress or grief or homesickness and possibly is a bit quiet and/or withdrawn and concerned about things and doesn`t express itself as usual, you can try Ignatia 30x or 30c (or 30k), one daily dose for some weeks till distinct improvement. (Other remedies to bear in mind are Selenium metallicum and Silica/Silicea)

Paint the sore spot(s) with Calendula mother tincture or with Hypercal, 2-3 times a day for a few days as necessary. Later you can use a dilution of one of them.

Do you happen to know your dog`s constitutional type ?
