Default Suddenly Angry Dog

BREED: street dog, but doberman obvious, basic doberman build and Indian hunting dog breed.

basically very health dog physically, shiney coat, no skin problems, good eater for the most part--sometimes doesn't like organ meats, good bowel movements--once a day in morning

NEGATIVE PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS:

may only spit up bile if not given food when expected--maybe once in two months if that.

has some tartar on canine teeth

HISTORY: was street dog, malnourished and lost, found two years ago, unfortunately was spayed in this condition by the local authorities at about five months old

DIET: raw meat feed diet with raw eggs and fish oil

BEHAVIOUR
as a puppy and for the first year or so was gegarious, suffered from separation anziety, chewed up a lot of stuff, over enthusiastic and comical. Seemed like a constitutional Pustatilla, but did not respond.

later as he became bigger, became agressive with other dogs, even ones he played with and would run around with

loves to smell around and hunt sand crabs on the beach

sometimes loves to eat human poop on the beach (third world here)

can be let off the leash on the beach if not crowded and will come when called--controllable

WITH PEOPLE: before, if he knew someone, he'd jump all over them. Could not get him to stop jumping on people. Would have to have him on a leesh when guests came. Then he would calm down. He could tell sometimes if he knew the person at the door (before we opened the door) and wouldn't bark but be friendly. To strangers, he would bark. Once he saw we liked them, he would be fine. We had students over for weekly seminars.

When there are fireworks or lightening, he will want to be with us, but does not hide, but may shake imperceptably.

ACONITE 30c would work

POSSIBLE REASON FOR CHANGE: In July, we went for a long overseas trip and left him with our maid for five months. She's not a dog person, but has always been reliable and has taken care of him before.

When we got back, at first he was all right but then wouldn't eat well for about a week. Regressed with his separation anxiety. Wasn't sure if he missed the maid. One thing is that she would insist on sleeping on the floor and he would sleep on the sofa--whichis not good for the top dog syndrome.

Then he started growling at our regular guests. They would start to act afraid.

Then he started growling and snapping at reglar workmen that we had. He bit one but did not break skin. There was never this problem with this workman.

Also late at night he was getting anxious like he wanted to go outside. Very unusual. Would take him outside and he would only eat plants. Then we started feeding him at night, then he stopped.

BELLADONNA 30c--calmed down.

At this time, a person experienced in behaviour suggested that we deal with the dominance issue. He was not allowed on the sofa or the beds. He was so dispondant that we allowed him back. Also we were having another overseas trip coming. When we came back, he seemed ok, but last week, i approached him on the sofa and he snapped an bit me--did not break skin.

So cushions went down and he was not allowed on anything. For a few days, this was ok. He would get down off the sofa when I would say "Down" in a commanding voice.

STRAM 30c was given--no observable change

I also did a lot of fetch with him, to gain control. Everything seemed as if it were progressing

Then he's up on the sofa and wouldn't get down, and snapped. Got him down.

NUX VOM 30c was given--no observable change

Today, he was going over to his place on the floor and I went over to pet him. He gave me this strange look as if he were trying to control himself. I continued to pet him, to calm him.

A few minutes later, he was walking to him place, and I commanded him to come. He loooked and kept on walking. I grabbed his tail. Realize that this is something I've always done since we had him. He growed and snapped. Earlier in the morning we had been doing fine with a few commands.

His body language said that he knew he was wrong and was waiting to be yelled at. Instead I took him in my room. He was fine. But obviously, there's a problem and I am at a loss.

Using bach flowers--white chestnut. See no change.

Thanks....

Fava

Hello Cynthia,

Ann told me you would post your case, mentioned in your PM to her, here on the vet.forum.

I have read your post very carefully and I think your dog is still bearing you a kind of grudge for leaving him for such a long time.

Give Staphisagria (Staphysagria) 30c (or 30k), one daily dose (non-stop to prevent relapse) for 6 weeks.

One dose for your dog is 2 tablets or 3 larger pellets (pills/pillules) to be given dry in mouth without handling the remedy, so please give straight from the cap of the bottle or from a clean spoon.

I very much appreciate you are helping street dogs with homeopathy all the time ! (I also prescribe for many shelter animals both in the Netherlands and in Turkey.)

Yes, I think you have something here. I realized that he was acting up when the maid was here, as if with her here, he was reminded of when we left him. And of course Staph would answer his anger.

Yesterday one of the watchmen threw a stone at one of the street dogs. I heard him crying. I immediately got my 30c Arnica out and put it in yogurt and gave it to him. He was all right.

I carry around Ruta 30c as many of street dogs get sprains perhaps from being under a car.

Thank you,
Fava

Angry

Hi Cynthia,

You`re welcome......it`s a pity I can`t throw stones from here at that watchman......that would perhaps teach him not to throw stones at poor critters..

If you ever need prescription for one of the street dogs, please feel free to ask here.....I`ll be here on this forum for some time.

It's not totally the watchman's fault. He would get in trouble if any street dogs get inside the gates of our apartment property by the owner.

By the way, the Staph is working on my dog. He was actually friendly with other dogs. We haven't seen that in months. So far, no agressive behavour. Actually, he seems a bit subdued, but I'm thinking it will all balance out. He seems to have suffered all the characteristics of rabies vacinosis when the dog catchers caught him and neutered him when he was too young and malnourished.

Default Progress report

My dog obediantly gets off the sofa when told (although he goes on when he thinks we aren't watching.)

He continues to be friendly with other dogs.

One Problem: when my maid of five years uses the mop or broom, he gets uptight. This is better than growling at her or snapping at her, but you can see it upsets him. I asked my maid what she thought and she said when she had her operation and we had another maid come to do the heavy work, that one was frightened of our dog. As far as I KNOW, the sub maid never hit Shep but it wouldn't surprise me, as in this culture, childen are what they called "wacked" quite frequently in school.

Another Problem: He seems a bit mopey. I can get him to play and fetch, but he seems dispondant or depressed somehow. There's not that sparkle in his eyes.

I was wondering with the fear factor and depression, would it be time for another intercurrent remedy?

Right now, I give him the Staph 30 in the water form as described by Hanumann.

Intercurrent remedies (often nosodes) or any other remedies shouldn`t be given during this const. treatment. Const. remedy can/should be given either dry in mouth or in a little water in a plastic syringe without a needle to squirt into mouth for the full 6 weeks, sometimes even for 8 weeks. (I seldom give remedies in water and have cured thousands of (shelter) animals on and outside forums!) Both methods were applied by Dr. Hahnemann.

Behavioral treatment in this way is based on huge empirical knowledge gathered over about 15-20 years in my country !

This const. treatment can bring from a little change in behaviour for the better up to a huge change in behaviour for the better.

We`ll just have to wait for the final result and hope for the best.

Addition :

An intercurrent remedy in homeopathy is given to provide movement in a stalled case.

E.g. if Sulphur is given and provides some benefit, then when given again it doesn`t seem to work. Then another remedy is indicated, given and does some work. Yet no remedy, despite being well chosen, seems to be clearing the case. In such a case the homeopath may choose an intercurrent remedy to move the case on to a full cure.

The intercurrent, also called interim remedy, is often a nosode.

It`s also possible to treat differently from the method described above. If a single remedy won`t cure a case then another remedy may need to be inserted between the primary one. For example, if Rhus toxicodendron and Bryonia are indicated yet Rhus tox. seems to be a bit more so, it`ll be given first, followed by Bryonia and if necessary then Rhus tox. again.

The latter method is mentioned by Dr. Hahnemann and Dr. Boenninghausen. They were the ones to mention the use of intercurrent remedies.

In other simpler words : When one homeopathic remedy is repeated, a second (intercurrent/interim) is prescribed, if necessary, in between doses of the first remedy.
