Default Bone Spur in Horse.

Hi...I'm new to this board, and would like to address this question to Wim. I have a 14 yr old gelding that is a barrel horse. He developed a spur on the inside front of his left knee about 3 years ago. At this time it looks like he has a golf ball on his knee, but it does get quite sore from time to time. 4 different vets have determined that surgery isn't an option for him, and have suggested the usual injections, Legend, etc. We tried this for awhile, but even the joint injections aren't really giving any long term relief. About 2 or 3 weeks is all it helps. He is the "go to" horse in the barn when he feels good, and too good of a barrel horse to give up on him, so I am hoping you will have some suggestions for me to try.
Thanks for any help.
Barb

Hello Barb,

Homeopathy is usually the only possible treatment for this musculoskeletal problem which is often successful. Same holds good for people with heel/bone spurs.

You have to be patient though, because it will take quite a long time to fully cure this, at least a few months or even longer.

Give your horse :

Hecla lava 30c, one dose 3 times daily for a longer period.

Also give Calcarea fluorica 30c, one dose 3 times daily for a longer period.

One dose of each remedy is 4 tablets (or 6 larger pellets) to be given directly into the mouth (do not handle the remedy) or in a small portion/piece of organic carrot or apple or in a soft piece of brown bread. (take out the soft part of a slice, place the remedy on it and fold the bread double and press). Do not give with hard feed/full meals, preferably not feeding within half an hour.

Store remedies in a cool, dark cupboard without strong aromas present.

Good luck with the treatment and please keep us posted here !

Wim

Sorry, Wim...I'll get the hang of this yet! First, I appreciate your quick response to my question about my horse, and am wondering if I can use the calc fluor in the 6c or 200c potency that I already have. I have ordered the hecla lava that you suggested, and will buy more calc fluor if necessary. Also, what happens to the pills if you touch them? Thanks.

OK Barb.....I understand ....no problem.....you can use the Calc.fluor 6c until you get the Calc. fluor 30c. Empirical proof has shown that the 30c is the best potency for this situation.

The homeopathic remedy (dilution) is usually sprayed on the pellets/pills etc., so if you handle them too much you may spoil the action of the remedy, because hands are never really clean. Tablets can be handled briefly.

Thanks Wim...I'll order some 30c right away, and use the 6c until it gets here. Are there any books you could recommend that I should have on hand with regards to homeopathic remedies for my family and my animals? I usually do better with things if I can read and study about them.
I would also like to thank SarahG for telling me about this board. I feel a very good education coming on!

Barb, here are a few books to check out.

Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs
Small Doses for Small Animals
By Don Hamilton, DVM

The Complete Homeopathy Handbook
By Miranda Castro

Impossible Cure: The Promise of Homeopahty
By Amy L. Lansky, PhD

Homeopathy: Beyond Flat Earth Medicine
By: Timothy R. Dooley, N.D. M.D.

The Genius of Homeopathy
Lectures and Essays on Homeopathic Philosophy
By Dr. Stuart M. Close

I don't believe that Hamilton's book will have anything on horses but you can go to http://www.minimum.com/index.htm to look to see what they have in the way of books for large animals. They should also have those listed above. You can also do research online for most homeopathic remedies, Materia Medica and Repertories...I don't want to overwhelm you with links, so the ones I gave above are a great way to start.

Julie

Who used to own horses herself and did a little barrel racing...lots of fun if you have a good barrel horse which I did.
I also had harness race horses and quarter horses for show and breeding. Been around that block a few times. Good luck with your horse. Give him a pat and carrot for me? I miss the horses terribly sometimes.

Julie...Thanks for the references. The website looks very interesting. I'll be adding to my library soon! I understand about missing the horses. They do have a way of getting under your skin. We have a barn full of them. My daughter is the one who barrel races A LOT. Fortunately she has another really good horse, and several younger ones coming up, so we stay pretty busy. It's exciting to have another plan for the horse with the spur. I can't wait for the other remedies to get here, then I'll know I'm doing everything I need to for him.
