Default Nosodes and oral vaccines.

A nosode is a disease product (i.e. a remedy prepared from a disease product) obtained from any affected part of the system in a case of illness, frequently from lymph nodes or from respiratory secretions, for example, nasal discharges in a case of catarrhal fever, and thereafter potentised.

In specific, i.e. bacterial, viral or protozoal disease the causative organism may or may not be present and the efficacy of the nosode in no way depends on the organism being present.

The response of the tissues to invasion by bacteria or other antigens results in the formation of substances which are in effect the basis of the nosode.

An oral vaccine is prepared from the actual organism which is associated with the disease in question, and may derive from filtrates containing only the exotoxins of the bacteria, or from emulsions containing both bacteria and their toxins. These filtrates are then potentised and become oral vaccines.

Nowadays it`s the custom to use the terms nosodes and oral vaccines synonymously.

I ordered the E coli nosode to have on hand for foaling. I had one case of foal diarrhea that ended up with complications leading to the foals death. It was an expensive foal and I took him to the vet at the first sign of diarrhea. The vet treated him with a lot of Banamine and I'm pretty sure it ended up giving him really bad ulcers. The foal got over the diarrhea but I could never get him to blossom after that. I used to put all my trust in vets but after a lot of money blown, and horses that died that I don't think should have, I've educated myself more!

So back to my original question - I read that some people treat with the E coli nosode as a precaution and some wait to see if the foal develops diarrhea. I've only had two other cases of diarrhea (since the foal that died) and I treated them with probiotics successfully. I start foaling in a month and I would like to have a plan.

Thanks!

You can give the nosode twice a day for 3 days, one dose in the morning + one dose in the evening (or early evening/late afternoon). Then one weekly dose for 4 weeks and thereafter one monthly dose for 6 months.

Should I give the nosode as a preventative or wait until I see symptoms?

I`d give it as a preventative now. Use the protocol I mentioned above.

Thanks Wim. I start foaling in a month and I'll follow the protocol with the new foals. Thanks again!
