Wim, in my case, the (shelter) paralysis cases usually include the bladder paralysis, which in turn lead to chronic bladder infection problems. (and FLUTD). At the first stage, I usually realize a strong odor with an increase in urine pH. Then the urine becomes cloudy and may or may not contain blood. Sometimes the test strips detect blood and protein in the urine too, even though it is not visible. It may contain some sediment, but the strong odor is always present. Mostly, the constipation also results in varying degrees.
So I was wondering about the remedies that might be used for the chronic urinary infection / cloudy urine problems that is associated with bladder paralysis - and are compatible with Conium. Most cases that we deal fits Conium picture very well. But I remember you saying that if the paralysis has just occured, it is better to use Hypericum 30C, right? And if it has been weeks / months since it has occured, Conium is more suitable? Thanks, Marin |

Hi Marin,
There are several possible remedies for paralysis in animals such as Conium, Plumbum met., Causticum, Gelsemium, Cocculus, Lachesis, Phos., etc. The main problem with prescribing for shelter emergency cases you are referring to, is that I usually only have a few symptoms/modalities to prescribe on (sometimes even less !) and another additional problem is that from certain countries the cases first of all have to be send to a translator for translation into English and then to me. So prescribing has to be very fast all the time without having sufficient time to ask additional questions, let alone full case taking, and prescribing on pathology is often the only option. Therefore it`s astonishing you and I have saved several of the poor critters thanks to homeopathy. Let`s say homeopathy has been very kind to us often tolerating the sometimes controversial prescribing ! Suppose someone clearly mentions the symptoms/modalities : paralysis of (lower) limbs preceded by pain, delirium and convulsions leading to coma, contraction of pupils, eyes have yellowish discolouration, bluish swollen gums, difficulty in passing urine, which is albuminous, small irregular pulse caused by weak heart action, dry skin with jaundiced appearance anaemia etc. then it would be easy, because all symptoms indicate Plumbum metallicum ! But `symptoms/modalities` in these cases are reported by laymen, but I don`t blame them if they don`t mention enough details and treat the emergency cases anyway ! Also for the different bladder problems, e.g infection, I usally need more symptoms/mod. for proper prescribing and all presenting symptoms, of which you mention a few, will have to be taken into account as well. to be continued Wim

Continuation for Marin :
In all (emergency) paralysis cases in shelter animals without knowing enough symptoms/modalities I usually start at the first signs of paralysis with Arnica and also Hypericum if the animal is in pain or distress. If I hear from the shelter that the paralysis persists I often continue with Conium. If the animal is old(er) and has urinary and/or faecal incontinence and (partial) paralysis or hind leg weakness Causticum is often indicated. The dosage regime/potencies/repetition/duration of administration may be different for each remedy. Briefly you could say that the most important remedies for paraplegia in animals are : Conium, Plumbum metallicum, Lathyrus sativa, Bothrops lanceolatus, Hypericum perforatum, Causticum and Curare. Also see the list of remedies mentioned above ! Wim
