The mother tincture is prepared from trituration with lactose. Pure lead is extracted from galena and finely ground until it becomes soluble in alcohol. (Galena is a lead ore that is found in Australia, Europe, the US and Africa and is highly toxic. Inhaling or swallowing particles of lead can harm the nervous system !).
This remedy was proved by Hering, Hartlaub, Trinks and Manning and published in Allen`s Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica (1874-79).
A state of paralysis preceded by pain is produced by metallic lead. It affects the central nervous system and also causes jaundice and anaemia.
Head : Delirium and convulsions leading to coma.
Eyes : Contraction of pupils. Purulent conjunctivitis leading to glaucoma. Eyes may have a yellowish discolouration.
Alimentary system : Gums become swollen and may have a bluish look. There is a paralysis of tongue leading to an inability to swallow liquids. Colicky pains develop. Stools become dark and hard. There`s a tendency to hernia.
Renal system : Difficulty in passing urine which is albuminous. Chronic kidney degeneration. Cystitis.
Cardiac system : Weakness of heart action producing a small irregular pulse.
Extremities : Paralysis of lower limbs develops.
Skin : Jaundiced appearance with dryness.
Uses : This is an important remedy to be considered in chronic degenerative kidney disease with possible liver involvement. Convulsive states may benefit from its use along with various forms of paralysis, e.g. radial in the horse. The paralytic action suggests that it could be worth trying in grass sickness in the horse, particularly the sub-acute form with colic and muscular weakness and atrophy.
