Default Care for the old (er) cat.

Nowadays cats are getting older and older, which implies there are more risks as to contracting more health problems.

The organs don`t function as properly as they should anymore, their teeth are getting worse, joints are getting a bitt rusty/stiff and sight and hearing may deteriorate.

Fortunately there are possibilities, with the help of homeopathic remedies, to procure a bearable life for these old critters !

Heart and kidneys are very important organs which contribute to reaching old age. The heart should be able to continue providing a strong circulation and the kidneys should be able to secrete sufficiently.

Apart from the remedies for specific ailments, let`s have a look at some other remedies which are very useful for the old cat.

Arnica 200x ( if not obtainable 200c or 200k) is a suitable remedy for the old cat that is lackadaisical (slow) in everything. The animal is tired and apathetic (impassive) and even sometimes falls over. Arnica provides a strong circulation in the cat`s body. Give 1 dose a week.

Baryta carbonica 4x (if not obtainable 3x, 3c or 6x) is for the old cat which sometimes doesn`t remember where his litterbox/cat box is, because of which he is sometimes not house trained/potty trained anymore. He/She may also suffer from skin problems, e.g. sebacious cysts. In such a case give this remedy 2-3 times a day till improvement.

Calcarea carbonica 12x (or 6c or 6k) is for the old cat which is too heavy and too fat and is slow in everything. Often he/she suffers from a beginning old age cataract. Give this remedy 1-2 times a day for a longer period (several weeks).

Calcarea fluorica 12x (or 6c or 6k) is for the emaciated cat with cataract and coat full of tangles (knots). Give this remedy once a day for 3 weeks every 3 months.

Wim, you didn't mention the biggest problem with cats getting older and older. They have more time to train their staff how to satisfy their every whim.

Wim, would this advice and the remedies mentioned transfer over to the old(er) dog, as well?

I got some Baryta-carb 6C (lowest potency I could get at the time) awhile back with the intent of treating my dog for his many lipomas (benign cysts or tumors). But I really wasn't sure of myself on this, and now I am involved in treating his arthitis/neurological issues, so the lipomas will have to wait.

I've since learned that Lapis-alb is even successful for lipomas, but again, I don't have near enough information to go on.

Generally speaking you could say that, but some of these problems are more seen in cats.

Baryta carbonica and Lapis albus are not actually specifics but only 2 of the several possible remedies for lipomas. For proper prescribing more details would be necessary.

Baryta carbonica is in fact a suitable and often excellent remedy for several kinds of old(er) animals, esp. for particular resp. problems, general symptoms of senility which are often accompanied by single or double incontinence, and senile dementia-like symptoms such as standing in corners, disorientated, staring into space etc. The funny thing is that this remedy is also often used for very young animals incl. the runt of the litter.

Some of the key notes for Lapis albus( Silico-fluoride of calcium/Calcarea silico-fluorate, `Whitestone`) are : acts on glands and connective tissue, hardening of the tissues of the udder, enlarged lymph nodes (which are pliable rather than stony hard to touch), increased appetite/ravenous, suppurative ear infections, abscesses, cancers (specifically carcinoma), fatty masses (lipomas) and fibrous tumours which bleed.

Sometimes particular modalities are used for prescribing Baryta carb. (Worse for extremes of heat or cold or when standing for long. Better for moving about and in the open air) For Lapis albus, however, there are no specific modalities.

One should also know the remedy interactions with e.g. Silica/Silicea, Conium, etc.

For horses one should know the principal equine indications such as melanoma, sarcoids, etc.

Lapis is not used very often in vet. homeopathy.
