Default Dog's Toe With Broken Toenail

Hi William:
My golden retreiver broke her toenail a month ago. The top of the nail is still attached, but the bottom half is gone. The vet prescribed the antibiotic Apo-Cephalex (750 mg twice a day for 10 days). When that didn't reduce the redness or the swelling, she increased the dosage to 1000 mg twice a day for 14 days. We are ten days into the second regimen of antibiotics, and the toe still looks bad (red and white) -- perhaps abscessed. (Is there a way for me to forward a photo to you?)
We bought some Calendula spray two days ago (can get Hypercal on eBay, if necessary), and are spraying the toe twice a day. Our dog walks 2 km in the morning and 1 km in the evening. After each walk, we soak her foot in an Epsom salts solution, and then apply the Calendula. We put a cone over her head to prevent licking. She doesn’t seem to be in pain.
Are we on the right track? Can you suggest something else?
Thank you very much.
Steve

Hello Baldwin,

A remedy for this kind of nailbed infection which is often very useful is :

Antimonium crudum 30x (or 30c or 30k), 1 daily dose for 6-8 weeks, but in any case till very distinct improvement !

Best would be to paint the sore spot with Hypercal mother tincture (2nd choice is Calendula) or apply Hypercal ointment or cream 2 times a day. If the wound starts healing you can use a dilution 1 : 10 of one of the tinctures using distilled water or boiled cooled water to make this dilution.

One dose of the remedy for your dog is 2 tablets or 3 pillules (larger pellets) to be given dry in mouth or pouch or dissolved in a little water in a plastic syringe (without a needle) to squirt into the mouth.

Reg. Wim.
