Default Travel sickness (animals)

For treating travel sickness, homeopathic remedies are very useful ! These remedies can also be used for jetlag and similar conditions. Travel sickness may occur during travel by air, sea or land.

The most important symptoms are : dullness, yawning, salivation, restlessness, excitement, nausea and vomiting.

First remedy to consider is Cocculus 30c (lower potencies are also possible). Dose approx. 1 hour before the journey and repeat just before the journey begins. Repeat every 1-3 hours during the journey, but only if necessary (sometimes treatment/dosing is based on previous experiences with your pet).

If Cocculus is unsuccessful try Petroleum 30c (or lower) and dose as for Cocculus.

When smoking people are present in the car etc. Tabacum 30c may be used as an alternative. Dose as above.

For jetlag and other after effects of travel : Cocculus 30c, 3-4 times daily for a few days until improvement.

Indicated for long journeys and for any fatigue/tiredness, exhaustion, stiffness after travel : Arnica 30c, 3-4 times daily for 3-6 days till improvement.

And if your dog howls and is very frightened once you`ve started the engine of your car, the remedy to give is most likely Argentum nitricum 12c or 30c.

You also can use ginger and peppermint.
I always follow these rules.
1. Put your pet in your parked car. Praise, pet, reassure your pet. Make your pet feel it's a party. Do not start the motor. After a few minutes, take him for a walk and then home. Do this twice a day for a few days.
2. Now put your pet in the car, turn your engine on, make sure the window is cracked so that your pet has air and talk to your pet. Shut off the motor, and take your pet out. Always praise your pet for sitting in the car.
3. Increase your warm up—motor on, car parked.
4. Time for a spin. Proceed as above and go for a very short ride. Talk, reassure, praise your pet when you get home. Do this for a few days.
5. Continue slowly until you can take your pet on longer and longer trips.
6. Do not feed your pet three hours before trivel.
7. Leave the window open for enough fresh air but NOT enough for your pet to jump out.

Hello Sue,

I also believe that ginger and peppermint may help for travel/motion sickness, but more research should be done, esp. for animals (!) There aren`t any proper research reports available yet.

But..... on this forum we are supposed to discuss homeopathic treatments only and esp. those confirmed by huge emperical proof !

I have used ginger (JENGIBRE) (Official Latin Name: Zingiber officinalis) and peppermint for over 20 years of owning dogs. Dr. Jill Bowen also agress about using ginger. Ginger and peppermint are both herbal rememdies.

Ginger-Mint - Contains certified organic ginger root, peppermint, fennel seed and chamomile. Helps relieve stomach upset that may be due to indigestion, excess gas, nervous stomach or travel sickness.

Carsickness:

Does your pet get carsick when you take him for trips? Try giving a few drops of ginger root extract prior to the trip to settle his tummy. If it is a long trip, you may want to administer the ginger again halfway through the trip.

Digestion - the stomach According to recent research work, extract of plums, is as effective as powerful medications for inhibiting vomiting in dogs. Infusions of German chamomile, fennel, and peppermint are used to control nausea in dogs. Relaxants and tonics such as ginger may relieve nausea associated with anxiety. Ginger is said to improve digestion of proteins and control nausea in travel or motion sickness by strengthening the mucosal lining of the stomach. It affects the production of prostaglandins and by doing so may be anti-inflammatory.

Car sickness or Indigestion
Just as in people Ginger is a great stomach soother. One Ginger capsule can be given thirty minutes before the car ride to help relieve most dogs of car sickness, use two capsules for large dogs. Ginger can also be given when your pooch has an upset tummy or excessive gas. Ginger is considered a safe herb so there are no toxicity or side effects to worry about when used properly.

I can add more.

Yes...thanks Sue....I know these kind of websites and even more than the ones you mention....but none of them has actual scientific research reports so far. For example proven facts of side effects and percentages of cure, what is the correct dosage regime for every animal, etc. Where is the scientific proof it`s really 100 per cent safe all the time for every animal ? It`s all based on hearsay ! But in addition we are not supposed to discuss other treatments than homeopathic treatments here on this forum. Please have a look at the Forum description ! (It says : Use this area to discuss homeopathic treatments etc. !)

Otherwise we could discuss each and every allopathic medicine for travel sickness as well. We know that homeopathic remedies are very safe !

In my country The Netherlands, a large number of medical officers (very experienced qualified homeopaths) working for VSM keep records of each and every detail reported on homeopathic remedies and Cocculus for example works in 70-80 per cent of the motion sickness cases, which is a very high percentage.
