Default Broken bones in birds.

When a bird breaks a bone it`ll cause shock fear, pain and if not treated quickly, often infection and/or swelling will soon follow.

First we should treat the bird for shock and if the bird is hot and agitated and there are skin lacerations give SD (single dose) of Aconite (Aconitum) 200c or 200k.

If the skin is intact and the bird calm give SD of Arnica 200c or 200k.

If for some reason there`s no professional available to set the broken bone(s) it must be a DIY job.

If a wing is broken , bind the wing in a closed position, aligning the broken bone and using the good bone next to it as a splint. Masking tape is very suitable as it holds well and can be taken off easily with scissors. Sticking plaster is far less suitable because it can do much damage in its removal.

Don`t bind the wing to the body unless you have no other choice as birds usually react badly to this, either falling over, or finding it difficult to breathe or refusing to eat because their crop feels restricted.

If a leg bone is broken, then a feather quill serves well as a splint and can be bound with masking tape, the broken ends together.

The healing time varies with the bone size and the muscle power. On average, a leg takes 2 weeks approx. and a wing 3 weeks approx. and a small bird will heal faster than a big one.

For birds it`s OK to give Symphytum 30c or 30k, twice a day for about a quarter of the healing time.

For treatment of stiff legs or wings bear Ruta graveolens 30c or 30k in mind !

Hi Gretella,

Symphytum 6c is also suitable potency and can be given to this pigeon 2-3 times a day for 10 days approx. Preferably 3 times if the bird is in (much) pain). If the pellets are of poppy seed size (e.g. nr. 10) you can give a few (2-3) of them for a dose or 1-2 larger pellets (pillules) in the back of the beak. (For birds with a small beak opening or any other awkward beak a clean pair of pointed tweezers can be used in inserting a tablet or pellets to the back of the throat). It`s also possible to dissolve the pellets in a little water in a 2 ml syringe (without a needle) to squirt the dilution into the beak. Even if the pellets aren`t fully dissolved the remedy will work sufficiently.

Wim, you have mentioned about using Arnica 200C when the skin is intact. Does that mean it should not be used when there is bleeding or wounds for birds? Or may be for all animals?

Also, can both Aconite 200C and Arnica 200C be used following each other in birds (with some time in between)?

Thanks,
Marin

Hi Marin,

It doesn`t hold good for internal use of Arnica, but only for external/topical applications. So never use Arnica externally on a broken skin !

And yes Arnica may follow Aconite and the other way around. They are complements. In emergencies a few minutes in between giving remedies should be OK.
