Hi Gretella,

According to Dr George Macloud:

1. RUTA 6c. This remey has an extremely beneficial effect on injurues associated with bone and cartilage and gives good results in the treatment of vertebral complications
2. HYPERICUM 30c. This remedy should be used in conjunction with the previous one. It has a specific action on nerve injuries and will quickly relieve the pain associated with spinal lesions, especeally when these are more pronounced in the lowe back or coccygeal area.
3. HECLA LAVA 12c. This remedy is indicated in those cases where calcification of the disc or discs is suspected. It has a reputation for limiting the degeneration process.
4. CALC.FLUOR 30c. Indicated more in the earlier stages and will help regulate the calcium metabolism in a constitutional manner and therby limiting the scope of trouble.
5. SYMPHYTUM 30c. Comfrey in homeopathic form should be considered if injury is suspected as a contributory factor to the establishment of symptoms. It could be usefully combined with ARNICA in this connection.
6. ANGUSTURA VERA 30c. This is a very useful remedy in conditions affecting the spinal cord and its use will limit any nerve damage which might ensue from disc protrution. The neck of the animal gives the impression of heaviness because of an inability on the part of the patient to raise it effectively.
7. CALC.CARB. 30c and CALC.PHOS. 30c. Both these remedies will influence the calcium metabolism in the younger animal, the former for fat subjects and the latter more for the leaner subject.

I hope this will help you a bit further.

Mirjam

What is the diet of your Dachshund and the weight?
There is a product out called Vetri-Disc. It contains 200 mg of bovine cartilage and a source of glycosaminoglycans. This formula helps to lubricate and maintain healthy connective tissue in the spine and discs.
And for pain you can look into Devil's Claw.

I also own Dachshunds.

Vetri-Disc is a good product. No none of my Dachshunds have had discophaty but I did have a Basset Hound that did have it. I have two Dachshunds right now a male and female. My male is 2 years old and my female is 4 years old. Dachshunds are known to have back problems. Glad to hear that she is doing a little better.

Hi Gretella,

Also please bear in mind for next time that if an intervertebral disc problem/disease (without paralysis) which mainly causes pain with a sudden onset in an irritable dog, Nux vomica is usually indicated in the first place ! This remedy will also be very helpful to give along with the allopathic treatment and moreover will reduce the side effects caused by allopathic/conventional medicine as well !

Sometimes a dog develops a disc problem/disc disease caused by grief following the loss of a close companion in which case Natrium muriaticum is indicated. This remedy is esp. useful for slipped disc situations following grief.

Hypericum is very helpful for nerve damage and nerve pain and also often very useful for slipped disc cases and if the dog is in rather severe pain. Hypericium is also often the best choice for cervical (neck) disease.

Wim.
