Default Help Needed with a Border Collie

Hi All,

I have a 10 year old border collie with arthritis. Any remedies that could help him? It is mainly in his front paws at the moment.

Think he might be consitutionally Phos, but I would appreciate any help and ideas.

Thanks.

You probably could look into Rhus Tox 30C.

Hi Sarah,
Is it an arthritis due to infectiion (inflammation of the joint) or an arthritis with degenerative changes? Can you also describe your dog more, does her condition improve when she exercises, do you see a change with weather changing, etc etc

Hi Sarah,
We also have a Border Collie who's 10 years old...with stiffness in his hind legs. We found that by changing his diet to raw meat and cooked rice a few years ago the stiffness that was already setting in seemed to wan a bit.

He then had an acute episode of paralysis (in the hind legs) about two or three years ago - and at one point we thought we'd have to put him down. We had him x-rayed and nothing showed up. I rang our homeopath for help once we got the results of the x-ray. I recall he got Phos followed by Nux Vom a few days later and he recovered 90% function within a couple of days. Needless to say, the vet was amazed and chalked his recovery up to luck. He has however, had some stiffness in the hind quarters ever since - especially after he's been lying down for a good while. Hip dysplasia seems to be a common thing in this breed, unfortunately.

We make sure to feed him raw meat (with cooked rice) and I notice he does much better on that than commercial dog food. When he's been given commercial dog food (in a kennel, for instance) I notice he doesn't seem to move as freely and sometimes feels pain when first getting up (from lying down). It makes you wonder what's in the food that seems to exacerbate this problem. Anyway, I'm not saying the food is the cause...but we did notice the effects of the different types of foods he was eating at various times.

Watch and see if the weather (wet, dry, hot, cold) seems to affect him. Or - if he gets up and moves around does the stiffness seem to go. Is he grumpy when in pain (if there is pain)? Or does he seem the same tempermentally....? etc.

Hope you can find something to help soon.
Best wishes,
Lisa
