Default Feline Diarrhea

Our younger cat, Lucy, has been having diarrhea for at least two weeks. There seems to be no mucous or blood in the stool. She is acting normally - playful, energetic, curious. Eating and drinking normally too.

Two months ago, she was given a course of antibiotics for a high fever. I believe the antibiotics may have disturbed the balance of her gut, and is causing the diarrhea.

I have tried giving her a little yogurt to reintroduce the good bacteria, but this seems to not have helped at all.

What remedies can I give to her? and does anyone know if there is anything over the counter like kaopectate, etc that can be safely given to cats? Can I give her a small amount of liquid probiotics with no harmful affect to her?

I have heard that fasting for 24-48 hours will help her body readjust, but we also have a very overweight cat as well and frankly, I am nervous of withholding food for a long time because of how quickly fatty liver disease can happen in overweight cats.

I feel another trip to the vet will be costly and he will want to do invasive tests on her. I think there is just a simple solution and appreciate anyone's ideas on this. Thanks and Merry Christmas! Gillie

I'd try more yoghurt after a 24 to 48 hour fast--with plenty of water or broth. Try separating the cats using the bathroom or a dog crate etc. to feed in.

"What remedies can I give to her?"

Possibly ???? Nat Mur 6X...for fluid imbalance/ diarrhea of 2 weeks--esp if it smells bad. "and does anyone know if there is anything over the counter like kaopectate, etc that can be safely given to cats? Can I give her a small amount of liquid probiotics with no harmful affect to her? " Small amount of either prob. = safe, but I'd start with the fast on liquids, maybe then a little boiled rice, then yoghurt and raw chicken necks, personally.

Work also on bringing down the weight of the fat cat gradually!!! Meanwhile separate the cats to fast the one and feed the other.

Good luck and Happy Holidays!
