Default Shepherd Vomiting

Hi,

I have two female German Shepherds. They are just over 6 mos. young.
They have been through the worms and parasites and been treated.

The smaller of the 2 dogs vomits almost every time she eats. I have had them to the vet numerous times and spent hundreds of dollars only to have this terrible problem persist.

I tried different dog foods and finally got the Purina Sensitive Stomach. I am only feeding about a cup at a time a few times a day. So far this SEEMS to be working, however it just does not seem like enough for the dog who vomits. She is getting thinner. I did feed them rice and chicken today only for Sugar (the one who vomits) to throw it all up. She is literally inhaling her food now because she is so hungry.

I feed them and then try to observe them after they eat as long as I can to see if Sugar is going to vomit. Again, on this particular food she SEEMS to be ok for now. Then again, she may vomit when I let her out in the yard and I would not know.

The other dog, Spice,, has thrown up occasionally but not to the extent that Sugar does. Spice is very nicely filled out and just so much healthier looking. They are litter mates and Sugar was the runt.

Does anyone have any suggestions? What can I do? I cannot stand to see this poor dog not able to keep her food down. And the one food she can keep down is not putting any weight on her.

Please, any suggestions are welcome. I will be taking her to a different vet after they heal from being spayed (in 2 days).

Thanks,
Cobra

Default Addition

I just wanted to add that after Sugar vomits her unchewed food, she then will eat it if I don't get to it first to clean it up. I don't think she throws up the eaten vomit though..

Thanks,
Cobra

Hi there

If it is simple regugitation of food- I would try Ipecac.
If it is actual vomiting after food it is more likely to be Phosphorous that is needed.

can you give a few more details?
eg
is the dog in pain ?
What is the vomitus like ?
Any throat symptoms ?
Presume the vet has checked the throat ?

Hi,

Sugar does not seem to be in pain. Her and her sister play all the time and seem to be healthy. I do not recall the vet checking her throat though. Just lots of stool samples each time we would go in. Each time they would find a worm or bacteria or something and medicate her and her sister.

She throws up all of the food and it is unchewed. So it's not like vomit vomit, but unchewed food that she throws up and then will eat if she gets to it before I do to clean it up. She is certainly inhaling the food and is starving each time she eats.

I fed her the Sensitive Stomach again last night and this morning, a little less than a cup and she SEEMS to be keeping that down unless she is throwing it up and eating it before I see anything. It just does not seem to be enough for her. I feed them several times per day now but small amounts each time. Sugar just isn't gaining any weight.

The Ipecac, do I just get that at a drug store? Do I give before she eats?

Thanks,
Cobra

Get some ipechac 30c and give her 1 tablet or 2 pills daily for a week.
If it is the right remedy you should see an improvement in that time.

You can crush the tablet or pills between 2 spoons and drop the powder onto her tongue. Try and leave at least 10 mins before/ after food.

Have you felt her throat- any swellings? Does it seem to hurt her if you touch it?
When you say inhaling -describe exactly what happens.

Does she bring back water or is it just solids ?
have just noticed you say she has been spayed recently- has this happened since then?

P.S.

I had a parrot and a cockatoo and their names were sugar and spice.

Your dog that has chronic vomiting needs immediate help. You may want to put her on some chicken broth and homemade rice and meat. Feed her slowly, a little at a time, until you get help from the website I suggested. Please look into feeding them all raw or a better qualtiy food like Innova, California Natural, etc. And whenever you feed dry kibble please moisten it with warm water. Dry food is just that and it takes a lot of water out of the animal's body to digest it.

Default Dog

well try to give them specilaised dog food that you get in the market and then see what is the dogs reaction
if it still does not eat that also then take it to a vet as soon as possible
maybe there is some internal stomach problem
