Default colic in 26 yr old horse

been researching on internet about homapathic remedies and found that nux vomica is good to treat horses with. i have a colicking horse thats been having colic since sunday night. vet came out twice and emptied contents of stomach and said that she should recover but she is still not having bowel movement. heard about this nux v and thought i'd give it a try. vet hasn't heard about it. any suggestions on the dosage and how often. i read somewhere about 6c...i purchased 12c....should i break this pill in half? how often? any help greatly appreciated

Hi there are other remedies fo colic but as you have nux then try it.
I would give the 12c every couple of hours until you see an improvement then stop- only restart if the original symptoms occur.

Is the abdomen bloated ?
Is she arching the back ?
Is there much bowel gas?
Is she grinding her teeth ?

You can give the tablet by crushing to a powder and dropping onto her tongue

thanks for your reply. i also purchased something called belladonna 12c. thinking about giving her this when her pulse rate is up. last night it was up to 54 ... this is what happened..sunday night about 8:30 she was lying down. we thought she was dying of old age. well she kept getting up and about every 1/2 hour would lie down again. did this the whole night and the next day. monday evening called the vet and he told us that she had colic and he thought he could save her. emptied contents of stomach gave pain shot and removed old stool and also gave her liquids intraveiniously. improved tremendously. she started grazing and acted like old self. next day started to deteriate again. up and down...couldn't get comfortable. called vet again , we though she dehydrated. her pulse was better than it had been day before and when he removed "sour/gas from stomach" her pulse went down to 42...gums looked wonderful too. only thing is NO bowel movement. vet again felt reassured that she would improve. did fine all day wednesday (not 100% but marked improvement) still sitting down often though and poking at flank. 1:00 am this morning she was lying down again..gave shot of banamine. improved right away. we are at whits end. now i'm trying nux and possibly belladonna. guess i will call vet this evening. hard to explain all the last 4 days in this forum.
hope this makes some sense.

Hello B,

Always in the early stages: Aconitum napellus 6c, one dose every hour for 4 doses.

If your horse has a full bounding pulse early in condition with sweating, dilated pupils and excitability and hot smooth skin, give Belladonna 1M or MK. Dose every 2 hours for 4 doses.

Colchicum 6c is given for distension of abdomen and rumbling of flatus. Lower parts of the bowel become distended and can be felt on right side. Horse tends to remain standing. Dose every hour for 3 doses.

Colocynthis 1M or MK should be given when spasmodic colic has severe pain and appears to result from having eaten green food. Motions are watery with wind. Dose every 4 hours for 4 doses. The typical cramping pains of this condition are susceptible to this remedy. It may help prior to professional assistance arriving.

Nux vomica 6c is given if the attack is brought on by eating indigestible food or overeating with straining to pass dung and urinate. Animal lies on his side looking uneasy, bending head towards flank. Dose every 2 hours for 4 doses.

Ammonium causticum 6c in case of preponderance of wind, respiration becomes laboured and short, with discharge of mucous from nostrils. Dose every 2 hours for 4 doses.

In extremely acute cases, it may be necessary to give remedies every 10 to 15 minutes. Generally 5-6 doses will be suficient.

While homeopathy will almost always help colic cases, it will not prevent the need for surgery in certain cases !

One dose for a horse is 4 tablets or 6 pillules (=coarse pellets nr. 35) to be given dry in mouth without touching by hands. Give straight from the bottle etc. into mouth or if necessary in a piece of apple or organic carrot.

Default 26 yr old colic mare

thank you so much for all the info you gave me. i am still confused though. you said that one dose for horses is 4 tablets or 6 pillules. is that for both the nux and the belladonna? i have them both in 12c's. my horse appears to be normal during the day...grazes and drinks but in the late afternoon she starts lieing down and biting at her flank. still no bowel movement. the last one that i think she had was on tues a.m. but it may have been on monday. so although she appears to be in good health i don't know how much longer she can survive w/out having bowel movement.
please email me back so i can know how much to dose her. i was giving her only 1 very small pill 12c...should i be giving her 4. and how often....every 15 minutes???
thank you so much

One dose for a horse as I mentioned in my post is for every remedy the same and the potencies I mentioned have been empirically proved to act best for these problems.

i am so sorry for being ignorant. so i can give my horse 4 nux 12c...(they had no nux 6c) or is 2 nux 12c = 4nux 6c

would you be able to tell me in your opinion how long can she live w/out having a bowel movement. we don't know if we should start talking of putting her to sleep. i don't want to because her pulse is averaging 42-48...her gums look good....i am so stressed out not knowing.

any info would be helpful

Hi B, The potency 6c would be slightly better, but the 12c should act as well.

As for the dose of 4 tablets etc, the potency doesn`t matter... so the number of tablets etc. is for every remedy+ potency the same ! If Belladonna is indicated (perhaps in the future) the potency you have got is far too low !

Remedies can be obtained from several online companies such as Helios UK and Ainsworths UK.

I can`t exactly answer your last question, because situations are different for each animal. But usually the horse will die within 24 hours.

If you order the right remedies a.s.a.p. to have them ready at home you can start proper treatment immediately in the future ! In case of colic always send for the vet/professional !!!
