Default Poor dog is so itchy!

Hi!
I know this subject has been addressed before, but I would like to try some other options for my dog since everything I have tried from the vet doesn't work (at least not for long).
My dog, Oscar, is a 6-year-old lab/shepherd mix (looks like a black german shepherd). For the past few years, he has had a terrible problem with itchy skin and hot spots, especially near his rear end and tail. He will chew on them until they bleed, and also rubs up against the furniture (I call it his "booty dance") and roll on his back on the carpet to itch his skin. The vet did tests on his diet and had me feeding him special food (he now eats Iams). He has also taken Atarax & Grisofulvin. It has cost me a lot of money and he still isn't better. The only thing that really gives him any relief is steroids, but of course I don't want to do that very often. He seems to be better in the winter, and is just miserable right now. He has even scratched an open wound on his cheek this time.
I don't think there are any holistic vets here in Myrtle Beach, SC, and as I said, I have taken him to the vet many times with no real results. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
By the way, I know absolutely nothing about holistic medicine, so please be very descriptive...thank you!

I would suggest getting your hands on a book by Don Hamilton, DVM, called "Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs". 'Small doses for small animials'.
The author goes into great detail about skin disorders and why many animals have them. With this book you would educate yourself on why your dog may be having this problem and about homeopathy in general. The book can be bought online through his website at www.itsfortheanimals.com Keep in mind that skin disorders are very difficult to treat even for professional homeopaths. I would also suggest you consult a homeopathic vet by phone or email since there are non in your area. A search online might be the best bet. Many homeopathic vets treat 'long distance'.
Good Luck,

Default Poor dog...etc.

Please always see a qualified professional for skin problems......it is usually far too complicated/difficult to treat online or by yourself !
