Default Need advice about cat food

Hi, just brought my cat home today after a bought of calcium crystals in his urine. Vet gave me some Royal Canin Urinary SO 30 pet food. Problem is that this stuff is expensive. Over $15 for a 5lb bag and over $1 a can. Vet said I could get something comparable elsewhere if I could find it. I cannot find the target ph of this cat food but the vet told me it would be a balanced ph and not something acidic.

Does anyone know of a comparable product or something that you could recommend that prevents both stuvite crystals and calcium crystals? I'm just kind of at a loss here as to what is the best cat food. I've been reading things online but that is just making me more confused. Should I just stick with the Royal Canin?

Also what exactly is a balanced ph? I read some sites that say 6.1 to 6.5, and others that say 6.4 - 6.8.

Thanks for any advice.

Question cat food

I too have a cat with the same problems with pH and Struvite crystals blocking urinary tract. He is 2.5 years old and I will be able to bring him home this Sunday.

My vet also told us to purchase Royal Canin Urinary SO 30. he could not give me any other info on other comparable pet food. I too am confused about this.

Default Thanks for the reply

Glad to hear your cat will be able to come home soon. I've looked into the cat food and I bought some Evolve canned food online but I think for the most part, I'm going to stick with the Royal Canin. The Evolve has a moderate PH, which is what we're looking for but it's not that much cheaper. Problem is that my cat doesn't really care for the Royal Canin canned food very much. He seems to like the dry food though.

Just thought I'd let you know something about when you bring your cat home. The vet may give you some antibiotics to give your cat. They gave us Clavamox to be given with a dropper for 10 days. Two droppers full in the morning and at night. Our cat was very lethargic when he was taking this stuff. He was fine but all he wanted to do was sleep. As soon as he got off this stuff, he was back to his old self.

Good luck.
