Need help with:

Cat brought in ~3weeks ago, after an injury where her head got stuck in some bicycle spokes.

Symptoms:
confused, dazed
blindness (imparred sight)
shock
obsessive kneeding of the front paws
infantile behaviors; unable to feed and water herself
dehydrated
increased appetite, but unable to feed herself

GIVEN ARNICA 200CH (2 doses 12 hours apart)

Cat fully recovered but now (~3weeks later) she is starting to kneed her front paws again, her appetite is diminishing, soft,(insufficient amount) stool and diarrhea (yellowy-brown, blood streaked, somewhat shiny and slimy ), some vomiting of bile, however there is hair in it and may just be due to over-grooming; seems a little less clear in the mind (but not dull to the point of confusion).

Sulphur? or Arn again?

was it a head injury? what excactly was the nature of the injury?

If Arn worked so well nbefore I would stick with that in a succussed water potency.

A general question for you - what is the behavioral meaning of kneading in cats?

Hi Barb,
Kneading (like purring) can mean she is expressing pleasure, is in distress or could be reversion to infantile behavior (which the injury caused). In this case speculating I feel is useless and was using the symptom as "restlessness"; however last night and this morning she stopped doing it and I would now describe her as lathargic. I spent all night on her case, she vomitted bile all day yesterday and had one BM consisting of soft, bloody stool which turned into more liquidy diarrhea.

Symptoms:
frequent vomit of small to medium amounts of yellow/white bile
soft, blood streaked stool at the beginning of bowel movement which ends in a puddle of brown diarrhea (frequency and volume normal)
core temp last night was 37.8 degrees (low side of normal; no fever)
no sinus discharges
eyes clear, somewhat staring
lathargic but alert
I've never seen this cat sleep
lies on her stomach in upright position
abdomin very hard, slightly distented
no appetite
no thirst

I came up with ARS, SUL and PULS; but so far I have refrained from giving her anything. I was troubled by:
ARS: not restless, no thirst
SUL: no heat, no apparent infection
PUL: no discharges

Can anyone see anything here that I am missing or misinterpreting?

Intestinal blockage could be a posibility, effects from old injury could also play a role.

I force fed her a small amount this morning to see if she could keep it down.

Krista, sorry about the situation. (this sounds a bit like how Julio started off showing symptoms......)

I will look up some things as soon as I can. Might want to try one dose China 30, in water and save the liquid just in case you see improvement.

That sleeping on belly, is she drawing legs up under her, hunkering, not lying flat out extended? You know what I mean ...that I referred to as the "meat loaf" position? Nux V in 6C may be useful if that's the way she's lying. If Nux V in 6 used, repeat as often as every 15 minutes for a up to 4-5 doses, then see where you are. If suspect blockage, might be a consideration. Nux works so well with cats..

Is she "collapsed"? Verat A?.....200?

Too much stuff on that last post of mine...sorry. I think if she were my kitty, I'd start with Nux V 6, water, repeated and see where it goes within a couple of hours. Can move higher if feel need after trying 6.

Barb, kneading is that motion cats make when they make their claws go in and out and move their feet rythmically....like kneading bread. Can indicate pain, anxiety, fear or pleasure.

Krista...if you don't have Nux 6, start with 30 but more time between repetitions. Does she need sub q's? Usually helps...but you know all that.

I really hope I haven't given bad advice....

hi Kkrista,
Why are you calling her a stroke kitty?

Anyway, I think since the injury is still recent and there is no other apparent cause of this porblem, you should try a dose of Arnica again as it covers these symptoms as well.

Then see what is left.

Opium is an unknown quantity at this point
Post

Arnica actua in traumatism encephalon - craneanos, with fracture or without fracture of the cranium and also on the consequences of this traumatism, as encephalitis meningo-, apoplexies, hemorrhages, edema of retina, etc.
It has dread of being a haido?
Warm head and cold body?
Arnica has great stupor.
All that I say it for the possibility of repeating Arnica that covers very well. Another possibility is Hypericum, for his mention of the blindness, since Hypericum actua for the traumatized nerves. Also it would look besides the Nux Vomica advised by Gpm, Phosphorus.
One sees it very badly really?

Thanks for all your advise, it is sound!

GPM: she is not collapsed and I thought you might enquire about the "Meatloaf" position. however her front paws are nopt usually tucked in and neither are they streached out (which might indicate respiration difficulty). If it were even a partial blockage though, I was thinking that she should vomit undigested food not just bile. And yes she will need fluids when I come home tonight!

Dr. Leela: I have been calling her "stroke kitty", because our theory is that when her head got stuck, she was deprived of oxygen for a time, possibly causing a mild stroke of sorts, esp in light of the blindness, loss of mobility, confussion and infantile behaviors she 1st exhibited upon arrival.

Opium: Yes her head might be warmer than her body (definitly her paws are cooler). Her eyesight I believe was pretty much restored with the initial dose of arnica 200. Her stupor is not very great at the moment, she appears coherrant and aware.

I'm inclined to repeat the arn again I think, but her nausea is pretty intense right now and I don't want to ignore that either. I guess I'll see how she is doing when I get home. If she doesn't improve overnight, I'll take her to the vet.
