Red face

Hi everybody,

Here is a problem. My spayed female German shepherd, Marta, has been licking her private parts for a few weeks. When I checked, I discovered some discharge: puss-like, with greenish tint, and sticky. Due to licking the vagina is a little red and puffed. Lab test didn't show any bacteria.

Except for licking, Marta is absolutely fine. Her habits, in terms of energy, appetite, thirst, etc. haven't changed at all.

Besides this problem, Marta is in a very good health. She's been on a home-cooked diet her whole life. She is very passionate and good-natured.

My first choice was Puls., but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Valerie

could be worth looking at merc and sepia [don't give both]. can't tell from the given symptoms which would be more likely - try to make more observations of what has changed since the onset.

Thanks, Anna. The problem is, nothing has changed, at least I can't see anything. What I know for sure is that it certainly bothers her: she would suddenly "drop" whatever she's doing at the moment and start licking; reaction very similar to a flea bite, except that she would lick, not nip. Also, once in a while she drags her butt (whipes out the discharge?) Probably, the discharge is irritating, judging by her reaction. But, on the other hand, she is very accurate in general, so, maybe she just doesn't like to be wet down there.

You are describing an "itchy" sensation, is the area swollen, dry or cracked or swollen, moist? Could the irritation be from the anal region or are you sure it is from the vagina. How's the urine and BMs? "Things" are usually quite close back there and cross contamination of one oriface to another can create problems. In other words you may think the problem is within the vagina when it may be the anus originally etc.

The anal region looks absolutely normal: no redness, cracks, etc. The discharge is coming from the vagina for sure, I can even squeeze it out. The vet said it could be a bladder problem but she needs a urine sample to check it out. I tried to collect some urine, but Marta just refuses to pee in a tray. So, I don't know what to do at this point. I can't even repertorize the symptoms, because, except for the discharge and Marta's obvious discomfort when it's coming out, I don't see any.

When trying to collect a urine sample, make sure she is in "full flow" 1st then try to sneak a tray underneath. All you need is maybe 1cc (or ml). One of my females suffers from incontinance, when its really bad she scalds the whole back area including the vagina, causing a lot of discomfort etc. Washing the area yourself might help to eleviate some discomfort. Have you looked into sepia? You may want to wait until you have urine results.

Hi Sherhan, were you able to collect a urine sample yet? Any changes?

Hi Krista. Not yet. I'll try to do it tomorrow. So far no changes, still licking. I noticed that the discharge is very stringy. Kali-bi, maybe?

Might want to try a small, disposable, light weight, aluminum pie/cake pan taped/stapled onto a long stick that can be plopped under her from a bit away. Don't we animal folks just have the most fun?
