Hello

I am writing in reguards to my 8 year old boxer. Two weeks ago he was diagnosed with Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia (low blood platelets). His platelet count was 21,000 - normal being between 150,000 and 500,000. At this time his vet has him on an antibiotic (Doxcycline) and a steroid (Prednisone). I know the steroid is very bad for him but the vet says this is the only way to keep his body form destroying what platelets he has left and allow more to build up. We just had more blood work done today and there has been no change in his platelet count. I read an artical where Ferrum phos. has been given for low blood platelets. If this is so, how much and how often would I give it to him. Or is there anything else I might try? He weighs about 60 -65 pounds but is loosing weight. Up until this he has been a healthy boy. Any information and advice would be greatly appreciated. I need all the help I can get in helping him to pull through this. Thank you in advance for your help!

Beth

Hi Beth,

I think the only treatment for this even in humans is something constituitonal, Based on a complete homeopathic history. COuld you also detect a causative factor?

Somtimes one of the snake remedies would help in an acute, depending on the symptoms, eg Bothrops, Lach, Crotallus etc.

Why don't you post his case, I'll see if I can help. IF not do see a homeopath locally and have him observed and his case taken.
Warm regards,
doctorleela

Thank you for your concern and willingness to help with our Boxer. I spoke with our vet again today. The vet said he was treating him for autoimmune thrombocytopenia. He (the vet) seems to think there is a possibility that he may have been bitten by a tick. I myself have not seen a tick on him in probably a year. But, I guess that it is possible and it would only take one bite. The vet also said he has seen cases where they have never found a cause. He wants to continue the Doxcycline and Prednisone for two more weeks and at that time run another blood test. The Prednisone is causing another problem, incontinence. Besides the fact that it makes him so hungury and thirsty.

I hope this gives you a little more to work with. I am very worried about him and feel so helpless. Thank you again for taking the time to try and help us.

I've not known predisolone to cause incontinence. Did the vet tell you that?

One would need to know what your dog's nature is like.
What are the other illnesses he has suffered from.
What are his likes and dilikes in food.
What is his thremal state. more snesitive to warm or cold.
What are his interactions with other dogs and people etc.

Regards.

Yes, the vet said the incontinence was most likely due to the prednisone, due to the large amount of water he is drinking.

His Nature: Casey is a very loving and sensitive. He has a tendency to be quite head strong. He is quite curious about everything but this is normal for this breed. He is also very protective of his home and family - but Not in an aggressive way. Just a very good watch dog. He loves chasing the rabbits, squirrels, birds in the yard. In the evenings, late he likes to go to the room where his bed is and go to sleep - this is before we go to bed. Other wise he is around and about keeping up with what is going on both inside and out. Up until he got sick he has had lots of energy.

Other Illnesses: About a year ago he had a prostate infection. With two rounds of antibotics this was cleared up and he was back to himself. Other than he has been very healthy. He is not neutered.

Likes & Dislikes in Food: I feed him a high quality dry dog food. At this time I am also giving him a high quality canned food, as he is so hungry. He has never had a problem with the dry food. He also loves meat of any kind, eggs, cheese, cottage cheese ect. His is not big on raw veges ( lettuce, tomatoe, ect.) but will eat most cooked veges (green beans, carrots, potatoes ect.)I usually add some meat and or veges to his meals. He will eat most fruits but usually only if I am eating them and give him some of mine. He also hates soggy bread.

Thremal State: He is more sensitive to the cold. But, he is pretty much an inside dog year round.

Interactions With Other Dogs and People: Casey is pretty accepting of other dogs. He does want to be the alpha dog. We also have Mastiff that is one and a half. They get along fine. He gets tired of her pestering him at times (she is just an over grown puppy) but you can tell by his actions that he loves her and is protective of her as well. As for people, he Loves people. He thinks eveyone should love him as much as I do. Occasionally he meets people he is cautious of (usually men) and will usually back away just enough to where they can't touch him. He does seem to be jealous of our daughter at times. This started probably three years ago or so. She is away at school now but when she is home during the summer or on weekends we notice this.... He will give her these funny looks usually with his ears back. And if she trys to love on him he will sometimes growl under his breath at her. But, the strange thing about this is, is that it only happens at night. During the daytime he never acts this way towards her. This is the only person he does this to. By the way she has never been mean to him and he used to sleep with her when she was younger.

Sorry this was so long. But, it sounded like you wanted detailed discriptions. Hope this information is helpful.

Thank you again!

Beth

I think my first choice wuld be Calc Carb and then Calc Phos if that does not help.

A dose of Calc Carb 200 and check the platelet count after 2 weeks even if it goes up by about 10,000, its a good response, We could repeat the Calc Carb as required.

Warm regards,

How much of the Calc Carb do I give him and how often? Does it come in different strengths? I will go to the health food center today and see if I can find it. I just want to make sure I get the correct product.

Thanks So Much!

Calc Carb in 200C potency, you may buy a small amount of either pills or liquid.

Just a single does of about 5 pills or 5 drops of liquid. The repetition depends on the response.

PS: You're most welcome.
