I have a rabbit going in for jaw abcess surgery tomorrow. Is there anything that is recommended for immune system support after the surgery, and if so then where do I get it? I am not very familiar with homeopathy.

Is this regardless of her size? She is a little over 5 pounds. Will this interfere with her antibiotics? The vet places antibiotic beads in the space left by the teeth to release slowly and get rid of any infection left in the area. I don't want to stop the action of the medicine.

GM is in time zone that is ahead of the US (if that is where you live) and likely not to be able to answer until tomorrow.... Arn dose OK for small creature and it will not interfere with the anti-biotic, in my opinion. Were it my bunny, I'd go ahead and dose him as GM suggested. Hope all is well after her surgery.

Thanks for the help and good wishes. I am in the US. The surgery went well, although there was pus in her mouth and trachea so we are concerned about infection reaching her lungs. A good portion of her jaw had to be removed, but she is doing a lot better than I would in the same situation!
I could only find arnica 12c. I gave her 3 little balls, which surprisingly she didn't spit out. What about echinacea? Is that a good idea, and if so, how much?
Thanks in advance.

What a wonderful person you are to have such concern and be doing so much for the bunny! GM will correct me but my thought is to not use the herb while she is on anti-biotics and while the homeopathic remedy is working. GM may advise repeating or perhaps making a water potency if Arnica 12C is all that is available.

May I ask what part of the jaw was affected and surgically removed? I care for squirrels and know their mouths are similar. We sometimes have abcesses due to bottom front teeth growing into the upper gum, lips or nose area. Wondered if teeth are involved in your bunny's case and if any were removed.

When I said I am new to homeopathy, I meant it! I have no idea what it means to do a water potency. I just stuck the little balls in the side of her mouth and hoped for the best!

Patti had a bone cyst abcess involving two bottom front molar roots. I was growing very fast, and pus was oozing into her mouth. She had already had her front incisors top and bottom removed because her teeth were extremely maloccluded (She came into the humane society with them sticking out of her mouth). I rescued her and had the teeth removed earlier this year. The vet thinks that perhaps this abcess might have started with a piece of hay or other food that became embedded in her gums between the teeth. It's hard to say. Her other molars are impacted, but not infected.

She's doing well today. I cut up greens for her last night, and she had eaten some. She seems to be in less pain today. This is one really special bunny.

Hi bunnymom,
Thanks for the information. It is the same condition that affects the squirrels. We lost one squirrel a few months ago during surgery for malocclusion and a more recent case is being watched closely and having her teeth "snipped" regularly, hoping for improvement without the surgery. Not chewing enough is part of the problem, so I follow her around with things trying to encourage her to use those front teeth. She's doing very well so far. The next step would be extraction, thus my interest in how your bunny does without her front teeth. If you can, please keep her progress updated from time to time. Would like to know how she adjusts and if she requires a "soft" diet. I Good luck to you both.

I only mentioned water potency as a possibility to up the Arnica a little....but if she's feeling better today, I'd wait to see what GM suggests. (I think he may be having a little computer trouble.)

I'm not sure why my last reply appears twice!

Patti has been without her incisors for about 6 months, and since she had molars, a soft diet wasn't required - they only use the front teeth to get the food to a size small enough to get it to the back. Thus I just have to chop her food to 1/2 inch pieces. Even with the jaw surgery, she should still be able to chew.

Doing without the incisors might pose a problem for a squirrel in the wild. But in captivity, maybe they'd do okay.
