We have a 1-year old male mini-lop rabbit, fixed, white fur with gray & beige sploches, gray ears, tail, & nose. Doesn't like to be picked up, but loves to play and be scratched & rubbed. Big appetite, diet mostly alfalfa pellets & hay (veggies maybe 2x per week, small portions). Very tame, good bowel production, toilet trained to go only in his pen. Sheds a lot, receives petroleum-malt preparation every week with a piece of lettuce to prevent hairball obstruction of digestive tract (has had one episode where he became "plugged up" for about a week during heavy shedding; got over it with petroleum-malt preparation & papain pills). In the past two days he's started a runny nose, no decrease in appetite, good temper or activity, but is shedding more than regular. The vet told us to bring him in tomorrow-runny noses are considered dangerous in rabbits. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, RF |

Now our bunny is grateful to you GM
!Seriously, how the heck does one give a bunny a homeopathic remedy?? Dissolving in water would be tough, he drinks out of a drip bottle, and a lot of it drips away. I can probably get him to eat a pellet(s), but I'm not sure if it would have a chance to dissolve before being swallowed. Suggestions?? Thanks, RF |

The little guy's nose seems a bit drier today than yesterday, so I think he's getting better. I dissolved 3 pills (petroleum 30c) in his drip bottle yesterday, and he drank some right away. Of course, he ate some hay soon after, so I'm not sure we can keep him from eating while drinking his "petroleum" water.
GM, what would you recomment for him when he gets furball obstructions instead of the petroleum-malt preparation? Or do we stick with the prep, but just not give it to him as often? The vet told us that some rabbits are born with a "predisposition" for runny noses & sniffles (I found that rather amusing, in light of homeopathy ), and if left untreated by antibiotics, it could move up to the eyes, and eventually the brain, at which point it becomes incurable. Thoughts? Thanks again, RF |

Here's an update, GM:
Two days after getting petr 30c in his drip bottle, his nose is still wet. It seems that he was drier one day after remedy, but a bit more drippy today (but not as bad as before remedy). Still active, eating, pooping. He's been taking little bites from my wife & kids-he's done it twice now. The vet calls this "Pasteurella multocida", a bacterial infection of the sinus mucosa. I'm curious as to how he's contracted it-he's an indoor bunny with no contact with other rabbits. He's still drinking from the bottle with the water containing the dissolved petr from two days ago. (PS-Update 3 day after petr-Now he tried to bite my finger: He's NEVER done that. Pulsatilla? And would this takwe care of the sniffles too?? Again, I'm in a bind because we're leaving for vacation in 3 days...) Suggestions please? Thanks once again.
