Unhappy kitten with raw ears

My mom found a poor kitten who has scratched her poor ears until they are raw. She will twitch her head when when she feels it itchy just before she starts scratching. She took it to the vet who ran an ear mite test and a skin test for scabies but both came up negative. The next step the vet wanted to do was a topical steroid cream... but admitted that she was shooting in the dark because she really didn't know what was causing this poor kitty to scratch. Because she is so young they have been making her an e collar out of paper cups...but that only lasts until she finally tears through the paper.

She is the sweetest kitty, warm and affectionate, she just loves to sit on your lap and be petted. I have a strange feeling she was neglected and then abandoned (kitty dumped). Besides the raw ears she two healed scars on her throat. We belive the poor thing is only about seven weeks old.

Any help we be greatly appreciated.

thanks
erika

Hello Erika,

Perhaps it`s a form of eczema, but first try local application of Hypercal lotion (Hyper/Cal lotion). Apply 3-4 times daily as necessary to control irritation and/or pain.

If you can`t get this lotion, try Hyper/Cal cream or ointment and apply 2-3 times daily or Calendula ointment, if you can`t get this either.

Please keep me posted. Wim (William)

Hi William,
Thanks for the reply. I haven't yet found the Hyper/Cal lotion but i'll keep looking today or I'll order it online if i have to. We're going to start giving her the calendula ointment today. Hopefully that will help.

Hello Erika, Apply the ointment generously, it won`t do any harm in the inner ear ! W.

Hi Erika. This sounds like it could be ear mites, which kittens can get very easily if they haven't been properly cared for. Have you had her tested for ear mites?

Oops! I didn't originally see that you had her tested. Sorry. I have had very good experience using pure aloe gel with my dog that was having a hard time getting over itchy ears.
