Default Cat eye injury or infection?

Hi, my cat was outside for 30 minutes and came in with his left eye shut tight. I tried to open it but he was in pain and the eye looked very sore and dark. I took Merlot to the vet and he prescribed an antibiotic ointment to put in his eye 3 times daily. One day later, he opens his eye a bit, and it is still very sore. I noticed there is a bump on his eye lid which is very painful for him. I suspect he poked himself with a end of a branch when running around outside. Should I keep putting in the drops and hope for it to heal, or should I return to the vet for further investigation. If it is a scratched cornea or an ulcer from a sharp object is there any specific treatment they would give him or just give it some more time to heal.
Thanks to any cat lover who has some suggestions or experience with this same thing happening to their cat.
