Hi Rochelle,
That was the first meaning that I ever heard of the term "split dose"--tho now it's also (more commonly? don't know) used to apply to water dosing, e.g. LMs. With the three given either 24 or 12(ish) hours apart. The reasoning I was given is that it (in some people's opinions) seems to reduce likelihood of aggravation; analogy I was given is e.g. a blender full of liquid, if you punch "high", you are apt to get a face-ful; but if you begin with 2 or 3 quick pulses, the body of water begins to move more smoothly, with less splashing. I've only done it a few times, simply because I haven't had problems with single doses; but that is the reasoning that I was taught years ago. These days I would also instruct the person *not* to continue repeating if they saw a striking response to one of the first doses, but I don't know that that's necessary... "On rare occasions, I may give a patient a series of three test doses with the instructions to stop the remedy immediately if there is any aggravation or striking amelioration. I only use this triple-split dose on those patients that appear hyposensitive when they cannot return for a quick follow up assessment."

We had a good discussion on the three doses concept here sometime back. Have a look.
