I did yesterday--get it off my chest, so to speak, where it has been hanging like a much-deserved albatross! It was very stormy and kinda dark here around 3 pm yesterday. I was playing away at copy-editing when I was suddenly startled by a hard thump on the big picture window next to me. I looked up to see one of our robins flying away. Because the thump had been so hard, I stood up and looked up and there was a young robin lying on the ground, sorta twisted but obviously still breathing. I rushed in the house, grabbed my Urgent Care kit, and hurried to the kitchen for a bowl, meanwhile pulling out of the kit what I thought was the bottle of Arnica. [I now know, and will hopefully never forget again, that it is the third bottle in the row!] I squinted my 63-yr-old eyes in the dark kitchen, too much in a hurry to put on my reading glasses, and tipped two tiny pellets in the bowl. A bit of filtered water on the pellets and out I went to the rescue of the downed young robin. (very probably the one I had seen fledge recently in a nest under our deck...oh, woe is me!) Unfortunately, our dog followed me out. She didn't go near the robin (though it may have known she was there) because I was in between dog and bird. I dipped my fingers in the water and flipped some drops on the bird, whereupon the poor bird did a couple of dreadful cartwheel-like flops that I will never forget. I flipped water again, trying hard to get some on its eye, as I have read one should do--and the poor thing promptly gave up the ghost. I was so disappointed, but imagine my horror when I went into the kitchen later to put the remedy bottle back in the kit and found that it was the second bottle: Apis 30c. My husband says I didn't kill the baby bird--but then he doesn't know much about homeopathy and he didn't see those horrid death throes brought on by the drops of Apis, or so I fear. I have read that you can't kill with H, but I do wonder, when it's a question of a wounded bird... A much chastened and very sad Teresa (in VA) who hopes never to dose again without putting on glasses and reading the remedy name very carefully, especially on a dark, rainy day! |

Hi Teresa,
I do not think you have any reason to blame yourself. It appears much more likely that the startling effect and the consecutive moving of the bird was at fault, not the Apis. And even without that the bird would have died soon, probably. My girlfriend was a bird breeder and the birds were kept outside in "volieres (?) - anyway sort of huge cages, partly like a shed, partly like an outside cage. You probably all know them from the zoos. Her hightmare was that for some reason or other the birds would get suddenly scared or startled by some noise or anything during the night, where they could not see the wall or the ceiling and fly against it. She had a light on all night in those cages and still was in a terrible state on New Years Eve. This collision was according to her the worst that could happen to a bird. They hit with their heads and break their sculls. And with a really badly broken scull people also die before a remedy even has a chance to hold - e.g. from the mechanical influence of the scull bones on the brain. This is exactly what can happen with glass panes. Hi, Gina! Thanks for the comfort (got similar comforting sentiments from
Shannon, Luise, Sati and a couple of other kind folks!) I am so glad the message I was partially trying to convey got through to you at least, hopefully to others--i.e., that it can be dangerous to pass on putting on those reading glasses and try to squint to read. I have worn reading glasses around my neck since my early 40s, so I ought to know better than to try to pass on them with those tiny bottles. :) I was in fact referring to a Wash. Homeop. kit (Urgent Care kit) that has just those tiny bottles, in fact: the 18 remedy kit that I carry in my purse always. I also have a 50 remedy kit and a 100 remedy kit (but our daughter in Madagascar presently has the latter.) (Wash. Home. is located quite near us in West VA.) I am in Northern VA near Washington, DC and we have had what seems like weeks of grey, even foggy, weather, with very high humidity and thunderstorms most afternoons. Quite high temps, too. Going up to 100 as of tomorrow apparently. Now for three days it is mostly sunny but even hotter. I love my garden dearly, but I will not be sorry to see Sept. All the very, very best to you!!
