It's worth re-mentioning that, in addition to our homeopathic arsenal, good ol' Vitamin C has had some success. Sheri posted someone's good results with intravenous vitamin C in quite large amounts. I wanted also to share my own experience. I had mumps (first and only time) in my 20s (about 30 years ago), and it was truly horrendous, the most painful thing I have ever experienced, visions of my neck exploding, gah. Short version: On the second day my mother (one of the original "heatlh nuts") started shoving vitamin C down me--2,000 mg to start, and then 1,000 mg per hour. The swelling--and pain!!--started to drop almost immediately, and by the time we got home (from my college) five hours later, it was nearly gone, and I was long-since pain-free. The next day, if I remember right, I was entirely well. Didn't need any IV, just big ol' pills. (Overdose of vitamin C gives short-lived diarrhea, but achieving it takes more than that, apparently.) If anyone finds a mumps case to test this out on, I sure would LOVE to hear whether it works! And if it does work, that makes all this hysteria (not to mention the vaccinations) seem even dumber... Dear Shanon,
I had tested Vit C on some cases. Many of them had a shorter period of the illness than would have been expected. My Protocol for Mumps - Phosphorous-1000 - Morning Noon & Night x 2 days works wonders in most of the cases. Give Vit C additionally if your patient loves it...:) Best Regards Somenath On 5/4/06, Robert & Shannon Nelson <shannonnelson (AT) tds (DOT) net> wrote: > We (US, Midwest) keep hearing about more and more mumps cases! > It's worth re-mentioning that, in addition to our homeopathic arsenal, > good ol' Vitamin C has had some success. Always best to individualize treatment and not use 'one' so-called miracle
remedy. Phosphorus is not one that I have ever heard mentioned for mumps or seen in any repertory or materia medica (other than one possibility for testical swelling) Mumps is usually very mild unless an older teen or adult and especially can be very mild without complications when treated with homeopathy (also would use Vitamin A and C) Also mumps in a child-boy or girl is rarely a problem. Mumps in a teen or adult male can affect the testicles - rarely - and even more rarely does it affect both testicles (resulting in sterility). Rarely. These are to only be guidelines in the case of acute illness or first aid. It helps shorten your time in looking when you are in a hurry with an ill child. It helps you narrow down a little. Read thru the list - if you find a remedy that sounds like it might fit, then go to your book and read more about that remedy in the Internal Materia Medica. ALWAYS best to repertorize but these are helpful. Repertorizing enables you to get more individual. NEVER to be used for chronic or recurring conditions. Print out and save for quick reference! I have compiled these sites - These are from a variety of homeopathic websites to give you clues as to what remedy is needed. ******** http://www.homeopathic.com/ailments/new/Mumps.htm A Homeopathic Perspective on Mumps ©1992, Dana Ullman, M.P.H. Homeopathic medicines are often effective in treating the average case of mumps, and help reduce the chances of complications. Aconitum: Useful at the beginning stages of mumps, these children have a sudden onset of fever, restlessness, anxiety, and great thirst. BELLADONNA: These children have a noticeably flushed face and throbbing headache. They have swollen glands that are hot to touch. They are drowsy but have difficulty sleeping. Mercurius: Right-sided swelling of throat glands typify children who will benefit from this medicine. They also have profuse and offensive salivation and perspiration. PHYTOLACCA: When children with mumps have stony hard throat glands, especially on the right side, this medicine should be considered. The throat pains may extend to the ear, and they may have an irresistable desire to bite their teeth together. One of their characteristic symptoms is pain from sticking og out their tongue. They tend to be worse in cold or wet weather. PILOCARPINUM: Some homeopaths assert that this medicine is the best remedy for the mumps, although there are few known distinguishing symptoms that it offers, except excessive salivation and perspiration. This is also a good remedy for complications that some children get from the mumps. Pulsatilla: This medicine is helpful in children approaching puberty who get the mumps and experience swollen breasts or testicles. They are thirstless, despite having a fever, and they are sensitive to warm rooms. Rhus tox: These children have swollen glands which are worse on the left side. Their symptoms are aggravated by cold, and they may have cold sores on their lips. ******** http://www.gnc.com/wellness/natpharm/Homeo/Mumps_hm.htm Homeopathic Remedies for Mumps Mumps is a viral infection in which the salivary glands, especially the large parotid gland in the cheek, become inflamed and swollen. Fever, headache, pain in front of and below the ears, and dry mouth (or sometimes excessive salivation) are common symptoms. The following homeopathic remedies can be helpful in many cases. Mumps in older children and adults can be serious, since ovaries and testicles can become inflamed or damaged. If areas other than the salivary glands are involved, if fever and headache are extreme, or if the person has abdominal pain and vomiting, consult a doctor right away. For dosage information, please read the information at the end of this section. See also “Using Homeopathy With Professional Guidance” in What Is Homeopathy? Aconitum napellus: This remedy may be indicated in mumps if the fever comes on suddenly and the person is very agitated. Stabbing or tingling pain can be felt in the jaw or face. The person feels worse from warmth and better from fresh air, and is often very thirsty. Apis mellifica: When this remedy is indicated, the face looks puffy, pink, and tender, and cool compresses are soothing. Even with fever, thirst is usually low. The person is irritable, disliking interference. Arsenicum album: Strong anxiety and restlessness despite a feeling of exhaustion suggest a need for this remedy. The head may feel hot and the rest of the body chilly. This remedy is sometimes helpful in preventing complications involving the ovaries or testicles. Belladonna: When the illness comes on quickly with high fever, a hot flushed face, and eyes that are sensitive to light, this remedy may be indicated. Shooting pains can be felt in the swollen cheek (most often the right). The person may also have a throbbing headache. Bryonia: This remedy is indicated when the person feels worse from any motion. Hard, tender swelling is felt in the cheek, and fever may be accompanied by headache. The person’s mouth feels dry, with thirst for long cold drinks. Bryonia may be helpful if the swelling abruptly disappears, but the person feels worse in general. Calcarea carbonica: This remedy often helps during the mumps if the person’s head perspires during sleep, the hands and feet feel cold and damp, and lymph nodes are also swollen. A person who needs this remedy often feels anxious and is easily fatigued. Children may feel hot, but adults tend to be chilly. Carbo vegetabilis: When this remedy is indicated, fever may develop slowly, and the person may feel chilled and faint. The stomach may also be upset, with gas and belching. The person may want to be near a fan or window, craving fresh or moving air. This remedy may often help if testicles, ovaries, or breasts become involved in mumps, when the other symptoms fit. Mercurius solubilis: This remedy can be helpful if hard, painful swelling of the salivary glands occurs below the chin, as well as in the cheeks, along with a large amount of salivation. The person is very sensitive to temperature changes. Offensive breath, swollen lymph nodes, and perspiration during sleep are also seen. Phytolacca: This remedy may be useful if swelling of the parotid gland is sore and tight, or if the breasts or other glands are becoming painful and swollen. The person may feel tired, dizzy, and sore all over. Relief may come from drinking something cold, but the person is better from warmth in general. Pulsatilla: Although this remedy is known for many kinds of children’s illnesses, it can also be very helpful when adults come down with the mumps. Discomfort and swelling may be felt in the ovaries, breasts, or testicles. The person feels worse from warmth and in the evening and better from open air. Despite a fever, thirst is often low. A person who needs this remedy usually is emotional, wanting lots of sympathy and comforting. Rhus toxicodendron: When swelling of the cheek looks reddish and the person feels achy, restless, and driven to get up and move around, this remedy may be helpful. Stiffness and aching are relieved by warmth and motion. This remedy may also help to prevent infection with the mumps, and should be considered if older children or adults have been exposed. Homeopathy Dosage Directions ––– Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a physician, a lower potency (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label. Many homeopathic physicians suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient. If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy. ******* http://www.homeopathic.com/ailments/new/Mumps.htm ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- A Homeopathic Perspective on Mumps ©1992, Dana Ullman, M.P.H. Mumps cured with Vitamin C injections:
http://www.whale.to/v/encephalitis.html Mumps cured with Vitamin C injections: "Six cases of virus encephalitis were treated and cured with vitamin C injections. Two cases were associated with virus pneumonia; one followed chickenpox, one mumps, one measles and one a combination of measles and mumps. In the case that followed the measles-mumps complex, definite evidence was found to confirm the belief that massive, frequent injections are necessary in treating virus infections with vitamin C............ A lad of 12 years had generalized headache a week after having mumps, this followed by malaise, and in 12 hours a lethargic state and a fever of 105°.. Admitted to hospital he was given 2000 mg. of vitamin C then, and 1000 mg. every two hours. Following the third injection he. was sitting up in bed, laughing, talking, begging for food and completely without pain........ Of mumps, 33 cases were treated with ascorbic acid. When vitamin C was given at the peak of the infection the fever was gone within 24 hours, the pain within 36 hours, the swelling in 48 to 72 hours. Two cases were complicated with orchitis. A young man of 23 years developed bilateral orchitis one Friday morning, by seven o’clock that night he was in severe pain, had a fever of 105° and was nursing testicles the size of tennis balls. Vitamin C was started at this time — 1000 mg. every two hours, intravenously. The pain began to subside following the first injection and ceased in 12 hours. There was no fever after 36 hours. The patient was out of bed feeling his old self after 60 hours........... A second boy, aged 11, was allowed to develop mumps to the point of maximum swelling without any therapy, then given vitamin C, 1000 mg. intramuscularly, every two to four hours. This lad was entirely well in 48 hours."--Dr Klenner The Treatment of Poliomyelitis and Other Virus Diseases with Vitamin C Fred R. Klenner, M.D. 1949 ******** http://www.doctoryourself.com/vitaminc.html VITAMIN C HAS BEEN KNOWN TO CURE OVER 30 MAJOR DISEASES FOR OVER 50 YEARS If so, why haven't you heard more about it? Why haven't more doctors used Vitamin C as medicine? Progress takes time, unfortunately. Fresh fruit was known to cure scurvy by 1753, yet governments ignored the fact for nearly 100 years. Countless thousands died in the meantime. The 19th century doctor who first advocated washing one's hands between patients died ignored and in disgrace with the medical profession. Toxic mercury was used as medicine into the twentieth century. And so it has been. The first physician to aggressively use Vitamin C to cure diseases was Frederick R. Klenner, M.D. beginning back in the early 1940's. Dr. Klenner consistently cured chicken pox, measles, mumps, tetanus and polio with huge doses of the vitamin. While vaccines are now available for these illnesses, please remember this was not the case in the 1940's. The following is a list of the conditions that Dr. Klenner successfully treated with aggressive Vitamin C therapy: Pneumonia Encephalitis Herpes Zoster (shingles) Herpes Simplex Mononucleosis Pancreatitis Hepatitis Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Bladder Infection Alcoholism Arthritis Some Cancers Leukemia Atherosclerosis Ruptured Intervertebral Disc High Cholesterol Corneal Ulcer Diabetes Glaucoma Schizophrenia Burns and secondary infections Heat Stroke Radiation Burns Heavy Metal Poisoning (Mercury, Lead) Venomous Bites (insects, snakes) Multiple Sclerosis Chronic Fatigue Complications of Surgery This seems like an impossible list of Vitamin C cures. At this point, you can either dismiss the subject or investigate further. Dr. Klenner chose to investigate. The result? He used massive doses of Vitamin C for over forty years of family practice. He wrote dozens of medical papers on the subject. A complete list of them is in the Clinical Guide to the Use of Vitamin C, edited by Lendon H. Smith, M.D., Life Sciences Press, Tacoma, WA (1988). It is difficult to ignore his success, but it has been done. Dr. Klenner wrote: "Some physicians would stand by and see their patient die rather than use ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) because in their finite minds it exists only as a vitamin." Remember Vitamin C if I sent in Part 1 of Class Vitamin C - see Lesson 2G, Parts 10 & 11 - as sodium ascorbate form Lesson 4C, Part 3 - Mumps cured with Vitamin C injections: Vitamin C is remarkably safe even in enormously high doses. Compared to commonly used prescription drugs, side effects are virtually nonexistent. It does not cause kidney stones. In fact, Vitamin C increases urine flow and favorably lowers the pH to help keep stones from forming. William J. McCormick, M.D. used Vitamin C since the late 1940's to prevent and treat kidney stones. Vitamin C does not significantly raise oxalate levels, and uric acid stones have never resulted from its use, either. Said Dr. Klenner: "The ascorbic acid/kidney stone story is a myth." How much Vitamin C is an effective therapeutic dose? Dr. Klenner gave up to 300,000 milligrams (mg) per day. Generally, he gave 350 to 700 mg per kilogram body weight per day. That is a lot of Vitamin C. But then again, look at that list of successes. Dr. Klenner emphasized that small amounts do not work. He said, "If you want results, use adequate ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)." If you want to learn more about the therapeutic uses of vitamin C, the following books are best: How To Live Longer and Feel Better, by Linus Pauling, Ph.D., (Freeman, 1986) The Healing Factor: Vitamin C Against Disease, by Irwin Stone (Putnam, 1972) The Vitamin C Connection, by Emanuel Cheraskin, M.D. et al (Harper and Row, 1983) Clinical Guide to the Use of Vitamin C, by Lendon H. Six cases of virus encephalitis were treated and cured with vitamin C injections. Two cases were associated with virus pneumonia; one measles and a combination of measles and mumps." "In the case that followed the measles - mumps complex, definite evidence was found to confirm the belief that massive, frequent injections are necessary in treating virus infections with vitamin C. This lad was first seen with a temperature of 104 degrees. He was lethargic, very irritable when molested. His mother said he had developed his present clinical picture over the preceding four or five days. His first symptom was anorexia (without appetite) which became complete 36 hours before his first examination. He next became stuporous. Although very athletic and active, he voluntarily took to his bed. He was given 2 grams of vitamin C intravenously and allowed to return home, because there was no available hospital accommodations. His mother was asked to make an hourly memorandum of his conduct until his visit set for the following day. Seen 18 hours after the initial injection of vitamin C, the memorandum revealed a quick response to the antibiotic - after two hours he asked for food and ate a hearty supper. Then played about the house as usual, and then for several hours he appeared to have completely recovered. Six hours following the initial injection, he began to revert to the condition of his first visit. When seen the second time temperature was 101.6 degrees, he was sleepy but he would respond to questions. The rude irritability shown prior to the first injection was strikingly absent." "A second injection of 2 grams of vitamin C was given intravenously and 1 gram of C was prescribed every two hours by mouth. The next day he was fever and symptom - free. As a precautionary measure a third 2 gram injection of vitamin C was given with direction to continue the drug by mouth for at least 48 hours. He has remained well since." |

Mumps Cases
PS This [..] means text omitted in this area. Clarke, J.H. "The Prescriber" Mumps As prophylactic Parotidinum 30, 8h. (This may also be given as a remedy every two or three hours, when the disease is declared, either alone or in alternation with the other remediesnamed.) 1908 Benson, A.R. Homeopathic Nursery Manual REUEL A. BENSON, M. D. 8 West 19th St., New York. April, 1908. Mumps (epidemic parotitis) Mumps is an infectious disease characterized by inflammation of the parotid glands. These glands secrete saliva and are located on either side of the neck under the jaw. The germ causing this disease has not yet been discovered. At the beginning there is usually slight chilliness, headache and slight rise of temperature (99° - 100°), with stiffness, and soreness of the neck on one or both sides. There is also tenderness, and pain in this region when sour things are tasted. The neck becomes swollen; it is smooth and hard, and tender to the touch. The swelling extends backwards so that the ear occupies about the center of the enlarged part. Both sides may be affected at the same time, or the disease may come on one side and later extend to the other. Its duration is from four to ten days. Nursing : The disease is not a serious one if uncomplicated, but great care should be taken to prevent the child from taking cold, or undue exercise. During the acute stage, the child should be kept in bed and dry heat applied freely to the neck. As it is difficult for the child to swallow, it is best to take only a liquid diet, and avoid especially articles which are sour or sweet. Hot olive may be rubbed gently on the neck, night and morning, if this rubbing does not cause discomfort. Such rubbing will hasten convalescence when the acute stage is over. Infection in mumps is probably carried by the saliva, and great care should be taken to avoid kissing the child or coming in contact with the saliva. The patient should be isolated the same as in other contagious diseases. The only serious complication is orchitis (inflammation of the testicle), which sometimes occurs in males, or mastitis (inflammation of the breasts) in females. It is best avoided by care as to taking cold, and by complete rest for the patient until the parotid glands become normal. Aconite should be given, a teaspoonful every hour, for the general symptoms which arise when the glands become inflamed. Belladonna is indicated in the later stages where the swelling is hard and tender to the touch. ****** http://homeoint.org/clarke/p/parot.htm A DICTIONARY OF PRACTICAL MATERIA MEDICA By John Henry CLARKE, M.D. Presented by Médi-T ® Parotidinum. The nosode of Mumps. Clinical.-Glandular affections. Meningitis. Mumps. Orchitis. Salivation. Characteristics.-Parotidinum has been used as a prophylactic against infection by mumps. In this instance it is generally given in the 6th or 30th two or three times a day to those exposed to infection. In the disease itself it may be given every four hours, either by itself or alternated with other indicated remedies. The well-known complications which sometimes occur with mumps, cerebral inflammation and orchitis suggest its possible use in these conditions. ******** 1907 Century Book of Health More common males than females [interesting.......autism in boys more than girls......maybe something in MMR especially mumps portion, needs to be also looked at......Sheri]. Most common 5 yrs to puberty. "In mild cases the termination is always favorable; but with complications, the disease is more severe". Treatment - liquid diet; no sour foods; tincture of aconite; hot packs; liniment to neck and throat. Lay people, teachres, nurses, and parents find it difficult to distinguish between mumps and swellings of the glands of the neck, but even general practitioners frequently err in this respect by wrongly diagnosing swollen cervical glands associated with inflamed tonsils, as mumps, and most serious mistakes can be made by diagnosing the bullneck of toxic diphtheria as mumps, It should be remembered that swollen glands are always movable and extend respectively either above or below the border of the lower jaw, while a swollen parotid anatomically lies in front, below and behind the lobe of the ear, surrounded by a fixing capsule, so that a swollen parotid is hard, tense, immovable and circumscribed. "Mumps is often complicated by orchitis in 25-40 percent of the cases while ovarian infection and mastitits is ony found in 5-8%. Enchephalitis, involvement of the cerebral spinal nervous system, is occasionally found. "A boy arrived shortly afterwards at the children's clinic, sent there by the sister of the surgical dispensary, with a provisional diagnosis of mumps. He had a temp of 102.8, bi-lateral swellings of the parotid gland, which was tender to touch, and with pain on opening the mouth. Pilocarpine 6, night and morning was prescribed, and the mother was told to bring him back to the dispensary in 3 days. When she turned up she remarked that the boy had mumps. Without thinking, I retorted sharply "who said so? There is no swelling at all". I was somewhat taken aback when she triumphantly answered "You did yourself on Monday afternoon." Then I remembered the little boy and to my surprise I had to admit that all signs of mumps, pain, temperature and swelling had disappeared completely in 3 days - a thing I had never known to happen before. After that, Pilocarpine 6 became the routine treatment in mumps [..] "Parotidinum 30, the nosode of mumps, helps in those cases where ill health can be traced back to a severe attack of mumps." ********* 1942 "International Modern Home Physician" In an medical book I have - "International Modern Home Physician" from 1942........ Orchitis - 25-30% of postpubertal male patients. " Sterility is rare and results only if the postorchitic atrophy is bilateral; it is not accompanied by loss of hormonal function. And just know the purpose of the CDC is to sell vaccine (these days) So read with those things in mind. Sheri PATHOGENESIS The virus is acquired by respiratory droplets. The virus replicates in the nasopharynx and regional lymph nodes. After 12-25 days a viremia occurs which lasts from 3 to 5 days. During the viremia, the virus spreads to multiple tissues, including the meninges, and glands such as the salivary, pancreas, testes, and ovaries. Inflammation in infected tissues leads to characteristic symptoms of parotitis and aseptic meningitis. [..] Up to 20% of mumps infections are asymptomatic. An additional 40%-50% may have only nonspecific or primarily respiratory symptoms. COMPLICATIONS Central nervous system (CNS) involvement in the form of aseptic meningitis is common, occurring asymptomatically (inflammatory cells in cerebrospinal fluid) in 50%-60% of patients. Symptomatic meningitis (headache, stiff neck) occurs in up to 15% of patients and resolves without sequelae in 3-10 days. Adults are at higher risk for this complication than children, and boys are more commonly affected than girls (3:1 ratio). Parotitis may be absent in up to 50% of such patients. Encephalitis is rare (less than 2 per 100,000). Orchitis (testicular inflammation) is the most common complication in postpubertal males. It occurs in up to 50% of postpubertal males, usually after parotitis, but may precede it, begin simultaneously, or occur alone. It is bilateral in up to 30% of affected males. There is usually abrupt onset of testicular swelling, tenderness, nausea, vomiting, and fever. Pain and swelling may subside in 1 week, but tenderness may last for weeks. Approximately 50% of patients with orchitis have some degree of testicular atrophy, but sterility is rare. Oophoritis (ovarian inflammation) occurs in 5% of postpubertal females. It may mimic appendicitis. There is no relationship to impaired fertility. Pancreatitis is infrequent, but occasionally occurs without parotitis; the hyperglycemia is transient and is reversible. While some single instances of diabetes mellitus have been reported, a causal relationship has yet to be conclusively demonstrated; many cases of temporal association have been described both in siblings and individuals, and outbreaks of diabetes have been reported a few months or years after outbreaks of mumps. Deafness caused by mumps virus occurs in approximately 1 per 20,000 reported cases. Hearing loss is unilateral in approximately 80% of cases and may be associated with vestibular reactions. Onset is usually sudden and results in permanent hearing impairment. Electrocardiogram (EKG) changes compatible with myocarditis are seen in 3%-15% of patients with mumps, but symptomatic involvement is rare. Complete recovery is the rule, but deaths have been reported. Other less common complications of mumps include arthralgia, arthritis, and nephritis. An average of 1 death from mumps per year was reported in 1980-1999. ********* http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/bv...d.section.3150 The main pathogenic changes induced by mumps virus infection in the salivary glands and the pancreas are inflammatory reactions. When the testes are involved, swelling, interstitial hemorrhage, and focal infarcts (leading to atrophy of the germinal epithelium) may occur. Infection of the pancreas disturbs endocrine and exocrine functions, leading to diabetic manifestations and increased serum amylase levels. Mumps virus infection of the pancreas has been reported to be a triggering mechanism for onset of juvenile insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM); however, a causal relationship has not been established. The pathologic reaction to mumps virus infection of brain tissues is generally an aseptic meningitis. Less often, the infection involves the brain neurons (as in early-onset mumps encephalitis). Histopathologic findings are widespread and include neuronolysis and ependymitis, which may lead to deafness and obstructive hydrocephalus in children. One human case of chronic central nervous system mumps virus infection has been described. The late-onset (postinfectious) type of mumps encephalitis is attributed to autoimmune reactions. Histopathologic findings are characterized by perivascular accumulation of mononuclear leukocytes, demyelinization, and overgrowth of glial cells, with relative sparing of the neurons. These findings resemble those seen in postinfectious measles, rubella, and varicella encephalitis. The most characteristic clinical feature of mumps virus infection is the edematous, painful enlargement of one or both of the parotid glands. Commonly, the submandibular salivary glands are involved and, less frequently, the sublingual glands. Pancreatitis is uncommon as a severe illness. Epididymo-orchitis develops in 23 percent of infected postpubertal males and may lead to atrophy of the affected testicles, although rarely to total sterility. Oophoritis develops in 5 percent of infected postpubertal women. Mumps meningitis occurs in up to 10 percent of patients with or without parotitis. Encephalitis has been reported to occur in 1 in 400 cases of mumps. Transient high frequency deafness is the most common complication (4 percent), and permanent unilateral deafness occurs infrequently (0.005 percent). Primary mumps virus infection in early pregnancy may lead to abortion, but there is no convincing evidence of an increased risk of congenital defects in humans. ********** http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/mumps.htm >From UK website..... What complications may arise? Although the swollen parotid glands and high temperature caused by mumps may be unpleasant, the most serious repercussions involve possible infection of other organs. In 20 to 30 per cent of the cases of adult men with mumps, the disease infects the testicles (orchitis) causing swelling, pain, soreness and a higher temperature. This often occurs about a week after the disease has broken out, and is a serious infection that may cause sterility. However, among the few sexually mature men who contract mumps, only half get orchitis. Of these patients, only 10 per cent are affected in both testicles, and even then it does not necessarily cause sterility. If sterility occurs, there is still a chance that fertility may return. Boys who have not reached puberty and are not sexually mature rarely get this kind of inflammation of the testicles. The risk of women contracting oophoritis - inflammation of the ovaries - is even smaller than inflammation of the testicles in men. However, should this happen, it has no effect on fertility. Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) is a recognised but uncommon complication. A less rare complication of mumps is meningitis, which may appear 3 to 10 days after the onset of mumps. This is an inflammation of the membranes of the brain or spinal cord. Meningitis is a serious disease, but in connection with mumps it is usually mild. However, it still requires close attention and special care of the patient. The symptoms of mumps-meningitis are: headache aversion to bright light possible vomiting typically a stiff neck, leaving patients unable to touch their chest with their chin and causing the head to bend slightly backwards. *********** So with mumps you don't see much of a change in description of complications. Many cases asymptomatic; very rare deafness; rare meningoencephalitis but most cases recover easily; other complications rare and usually recover without problem. The question of diabetes after mumps vaccine is an interesting one. We also see the possibility of diabetes after viral vaccines. And homeopathic treatment very successful. But generally do you see a huge problem after you have waded through all of this? Sheri copyright 2005 Sheri Nakken |

Hi Sheri,
I wonder why they would give 1,000 mg as a *shot*? I don't recall any trouble swallowing the pills, grotesquely swollen as I was, and there are drink powders... I'm not sure how to understand that...
Using--again--my family experiences, my mother (now 82) is *extremely*, off-the-charts acid, in spite of several homeopaths' efforts (as well as my own), and in spite of an extremely good diet (no junk; limited meat; tons of veggies, tons of raw, tons of "green drinks", tons of supplements and no I don't think those have been the cause...). Which might in part explain her extremely high *need* for vitamin C (10,000 mg daily, or else symptoms return within a day or two), but she certainly does absorb at least *some*, otherwise it would not help her and she would not keep using it... Maybe acidity makes it *harder* to absorb, so that you need to take more? (For her the acidic type is also effective, tho she's now using calcium and/or sodium ascorbate, depending on what she can get in a form she can use.
