Not homoeopathy, so I hope you all will excuse my asking if anyone has tried, successfully or otherwise, using the Bates method for improvement of visual acuity?
When I read the book it seemed like a lot of bother and I would only make the effort to do it if someone could tell me they had had a lot of benefit. Thanks in advance...

My lovely homoeopath used the Bates Method and it has been successful for her. She has managed to postpone wearing spectacles, even for looking at the small print in repertories, and she's in her 50s. I think she went to a practitioner for help though.

Know what you mean about it seeming like a lot of bother, I found it a bit mind-boggling when I read a book on it. Good luck!

I haven't tried the Bates Method (only just got hold of the book), but tried simple eye exercises whilst commuting (i.e. about 15 minutes, twice a day) after the optician told me I couldn't possibly see without glasses to correct my astigmatism. When I asked why it only bothered me about 5% of the time, she said I probably had it better controlled the rest of the time, so I figured it was something that could be controlled. I found an article which said to repeatedly look quickly from near objects to far objects, and back again, doing this in all four quadrants of vision, and preferably choosing contrasting brights/darks.

I did this religiously, until I forgot! But I haven't yet given in to buying spectacles, and any time my vision gets blurry I remember again! I'm too human to remember all the time, but they are basically just little muscles that can be worked like any other muscles ("use it or lose it"). It's been nearly two years since I last had my eyes tested...

Wish you well,

Maria

There is some glasses you can get, who knows where, that have tiny little holes in them. It forces the near-sighted person to focus on details. I have a pair somewhere but I was too lazy to use them. Maybe some site on internet might be selling them. When I used to practice meditatiion and relaxation my eye prescription went much lower..think it was relaxation exercises for the eyes.

Hmmm...

I tried to read the Bates book some time ago and it did seem like a lot of very hard work. But they are just muscles after all.

Maria, can you go into more detail about the eye exercises please. I would be interested in trying them out, there are so many opportunities to do that sort of thing, a bit like pelvic floor exercises .

I am desperatly short-sighted , I can't read the big letter at the top of the chart, although now I have reached the ripe old age of almost 38, my optitian tell me it means I will not need reading glasses as soon. I think this is true as I have more ability to bring the top letter into focus now .

I borrowed Bates' book from the library and dropped it in the bath. I had to iron the pages before I returned it . There just isn't the same temptation to read in the shower .

Anna what a great post for using the smilies .

Janyce, I complement your deployment of the faces.
The problem for me is that I am short sighted to the extent that I couldn't read, write, recognise a friend in front of my nose, let alone drive without my specs. As I understand it, you have to cast your glasses aside totally if you are to benefit from Bates.
Aldous Huxley was virtually blind when his vision was rescued by the method, but at that stage you don't have the choice to carry on with normal day to day life. Being a Huxley I expect he had someone to do everything for him anyway. Also, I suppose it would depend on the timescale involved, as if it only took, say a week, one could go on some kind of retreat and get it over with in one swoop.
