Can you be a bit more specific? Are we talking a-kind-of 'Giardia' or 'Tropical sprue' or what. Symptoms more important than name I hasten to add....

Doctors in Jakarta were not sure what I had. Maybe several things. They referred to the possibilities of Giardia (I was given Flagyl around January/Feb 1999. I also had Giardia twenty years ago after a trip to India.), an unknown virus or bacteria (white blood cell count was not normal), possibly a mild form of typhoid, possibly irritable bowel syndrome, possibly an unknown parasite, possibly stress. I was in Jakarta 1990-99 and was in contact with Indonesians with all manner of illnesses, fatal and otherwise (Typhoid, TB, dysentery, viruses, vomiting blood,fevers...) MY SYMPTOMS: (As far as I can remember. It's often difficult to remember things like stool colour!) 1997- Suddenly VOMITING CUPFULS OF BLOOD,after green bile came up. Wretching. Endoscopy showed inflamed stomach but no other problems. Stomach looked clear at second endoscopy a few months later. Had not been feeling well for a week or so before I entered hospital. (small amount of blood vomited previous week) DIARRHOEA lasted several days, until given medication to stop it. Watery, relatively painless, several times a day, explosive. PERSPIRATION soaked shirt, made me feel chilly, chest and face covered in sweat. No high temperature. HEADACHE like a hangover, very restless disturbed sleep, drousy, need to keep turning over, bending into different positions. STOMACH PAIN gradually eased off over a week or so. Felt better after a few weeks. Doctor thought I'd had a virus or bacteria causing gastritis. 1999- December DIARRHOEA lasting five days. Watery, green, explosive. PERSPIRATION made shirt wet, made me feel chilly. HEADACHE like a hangover. Mainly left hand side of head, neck, face, shoulder. NO vomiting or stomach pain as far as I can remember. White blood cell count abnormal. One doctor thought I had mild typhoid. Another disagreed. 1999 February VOMITED BLOOD. (Endoscopy in UK a few months later showed no problem apart from hiatus hernia) DIARRHOEA watery, urgent. PERSPIRATION clothes felt soaked and chilly but no high temperature. HEADACHE same as before but not so severe. Given Flagyl on two separate occasions. 1999 March MUCH GAS FROM ANUS. Particularly in the early and late evening. Evil smelling I think. Feeling of being bloated. 'DIARRHOEA' One or two loose bowel movements in the morning. Very large bulky loose stools light but not white in colour, I think. HEADACHE of the hangover type. Helped by bending head backwards or resting. Feeling of tiredness, like mild flu. Calf muscles felt sore as if I'd had flu. PERSPIRATION and soaked clothes and chill with any brisk exercise. One doctor thought it might be stress. OTHER SYMPTOMS - I tend to be the Argen.nit type- irritable, nervous, impulsive, liking for cheese and salt. Worse from worry. I am seen as being quiet and shy and sensitive,(calc.carb?) although I was a school teacher before retiring (I am aged 54 and retired due to the hearing problem called OTOSCLEROSIS). I am sometimes worse after eating fat (carbo.veg?). I don't like cold damp weather. I am a bit of the Nux.vom type- thin, inclined to be impatient. Hate draughts. I smoke but seldom drink. PRESENT STATE OF HEALTH- Endoscopy shows stomach is fine (apart from hiatus hernia). From time to time, I still get bouts of- DIARRHOEA (only one or two morning bowel movements, liquid or very soft, normal colour, painless) PERSPIRATION with brisk exercise my shirt and face will be soaking HEADACHE hangover type headache GAS -lots and lots in evening I am feeling reasonably fit. I wonder if the problem is parasites or nervous dyspepsia or a virus or what? Calves of legs sore, as if I've had mild flu. |

Hi, Kenstobbs.
Is there a possibility for contact with some organo-phosphoric pesticids, in your history in Indonesia? I ask because of the lack of temprature and the massive perspirastion. I'm sure rhe members of this BB will soon enter your case, and than you'l get all the possibilities classic homeopathy can offer for your health to be reastablished. good luck! shoshy. |

Dear Ken
I have a feeling you may need Merc, but wait to see what others say. Also, could you post details about your otosclerosis - is it bilateral? What is the history of it and all symptoms you can remember since onset. You obviously have some knowledge of remedies, does this mean you have self-prescribed? If so what? No homoeopath is going to tell you that your symptoms are caused by 'stress'. We are more able to help. |

Dear Shoshy, Many thanks for your interest. As far as I know there has been no contact in Indonesia with organo-phosphoric pesticides. But, I now live in an area surrounded by farms!
Dear Anna, Many thanks for your suggestion about Merc. I am a recent convert to homeopathic medicine. I had a dizzy spell about a month ago. The GP said it was caused by an ear infection. I felt I was toppling over, or felt the room was spinning round when I got up from my bed or lay down. As the doctor couldn't help I tried self prescribing BELLADONA, CALC FLUOR, NAT MUR and SILICEA. I got better immediately and have had no recurrence. The OTOSCLEROSIS runs in the family, on my father's side. I noticed my hearing was not so good back about 1992 (in my forties).A specialist in London diagnosed OTOSCLEROSIS and reccommended a hearing aid, which helps. I think it is bilateral hearing loss. I don't hear so well in crowded rooms with background noise. I've tried RHUS TOX for a sore shoulder and it has apparently helped. I welcome all suggestions!!! |

Dear Ken
The suggestion of Merc is interim and not decided upon. Please don't take any more remedies yet. About your dizziness. Which ear? Were you falling back forward, left or right? Any nausea/vomiting with the dizziness or other symptoms? Anything which made it better or worse apart from lying still/movement? Also, how did you respond personally when the vomiting of blood etc first started? eg were you calm, fearful, thought you were dying, aggressive or anything else? Similarly, what was and is your attitude to your otosclerosis? Any prominent dreams? From your post I could tell you were a Brit. with a polished middle-class-patient manner! But what are you like inside? The real you? Health history prior to onset of symptoms? Which shoulder was sore? Please take time to reflect and post in detail. |

Again, many thanks for the interest shown. In reply to the questions-
Malaria- so far as I know I was tested for this and there was apparently no sign of malaria (if that's what was being referred to). There was Malaria in the Jakarta area, but not in the centre. Dizziness, which ear? I was not aware of any ear infection but the doctor thought I might have an ear infection. My nose was blocked up and glands slightly swollen at that time. Falling over feeling- walking down hill, or bending over, I felt I might fall forward. There was no nausea or vomiting. (My father and mother once had this problem and it was accompanied by nausea and vomiting in their cases. My father is 85). Better from ? The homeopathic pills referred to previously got me better. When I vomited blood (1997, 1999) I was fairly calm but obviously worried enough to hurry to the hospital. Jakarta at that time was a fairly stressful place which may or may not be relevant. I was concerned about levels of violence, job security, the deaths of some Indonesian children I'd known (tetanus, TB, encephalitis, drowning, fever and vomiting blood, typhoid etc.) Dreams- sometimes a dream of me being chased- like a Hollywood drama where someone is pursued by baddies, and keeps on escaping by the skin of his teeth... The real me- difficult over the web- I'm single, bit of a loner, standards maybe too high when choosing friends, would like more intimate friendships, usually first to arrive at a party and first to leave, a bit of a grumpy old bachelor sometimes, grumpy in supermarket queues, angry with low standards of the Tird World... I do a bit of writing, painting, gardening...In Jakarta I used to visit institutions for mentally backward kids, take kids from the slums to hospitals, wander through the countryside and the city, chat to the locals rather than fellow expats. Sometimes a bit insecure. Not keen on flying or fast vehicles... Keen on Mediterranean and hot countries. Done a lot of travelling. Health prior to all this- broke my arm 3 times when a child, appendix removed when a teenager, occasional dyspepsia, took tagamet for a very long time (not now). Shoulder- on my left. May be related to broken arm? or to posture? Working at computer? |
