I had gone through the the various various posts in this thread.The most common suggested remedies for acid reflux is Natrum Phos, Acid Sulphuric ,Arg Nitricum, Bismuth ,Phosphorus,Nux Vom etc depending up on the symptoms. Quite surprisingly no one ever has mentioned about Muriatic as a remedy for heartburn I would like to know whether Muriatic acid can be used for this condition of biliousness , acid reflux, and burning feeling of alimentary tract

It is possible that, depending on symptoms/modalities, Muriaticum acidum (Acidum hydrochloricum) is prescribed for acidity, slow digestion, (hyper)chlorhydria etc. Potencies up to the 200c are used. Sometimes very low potencies and often the 30c.

Discovered by alchemists in the 13th century, hydrochloric acid is present in the stomach`s gastric juices. In excess it can cause gastric ulcers to develop, while a deficiency may lead to poor absorption and anemia. For the preparation of the hom.remedy the acid is dissolved in alcohol, diluted and succussed.

Patients for whom this remedy is most suitable tend to feel weak to move. They are drowsy by day and restless in bed. They have anxious dreams and are prone to talking in their sleep. They may be either sad and reserved or loquacious. They are often irritable and fretful and their minds may be crowded with thoughts. This remedy is typically prescribed for weakness or physical collapse e.g. associated with CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) or developing after a feverish illness such as typhoid or infectious mononucleosis.

The muscles, esp. those of the heart, tongue, bladder and anus may be weak, exhausted or even partially paralyzed.

Muriaticum acidum is administered when the collapsed state is associated with dryness, bleeding, and ulceration of the mucous membranes of the mouth and the digestive tract. A heavy tongue may make talking difficult and deep-seated canker sores may develop on the tongue.

Symptoms are better with warmth, with movement and lying on the right side.

Symptoms are worse in wet weather, from touch, from swimming in the sea, during menstruation and from cold drinks.

Several remedies for acidity ( heartburn) are possible and some of them can sometimes be prescribed on important keynotes.

Remedies often used for this disorder are : Acidum phos., Acidum sulph., Ammonium carb., Argentum nitr., Calcarea carb., Capsicum, Carbo veg., Conium mac., Iris vers., Natrium carb., Natrium phos., Nux vomica, Pulsatilla nig., Robinia, Strontium brom., Sulph.acid., Ars.album, Cicuta, Colchicum, Lycopodium, Phosphorus, Sulphur.

So for example, when the symptoms are worse about 11 a.m. with belching as well as burning sensations consider/study Sulphur and when the patient has burning sensations in the epigastrium and between the shoulder blades consider/study Phosphorus and with nausea at the smell, sight or even thought of food consider/study Colchicum etc.

Dear Dr Wim
Last week I attended a dinner when I had some alcohol ( just about moderate)before having the food which was quite rich.Quite unusual to me it was I had acid reflux in the night after I went to sleep and had wake up by around 3 AM with an unusual sweat , burning pain in the stomach and alimentary tract. I thought it was clearly a case indigestion and gulped plenty of water and slept. Next morning although I was normal otherwise burning sensation and tendency to burping continued for two days when I thought I must attend to this problem. Based on the realities of the problem One of the following remedies viz NuxVomica, Pulsatilla, Carbo Veg,Acid Sulphuric, Arg Nitricum would have been the most ideal choice,instead I just thought I shoud try Acid Muriaticum exactly based on what you had mentioned (about gastric juices)to tackle the Acid imbalance took wet doses of Acid Muriaticum about 1/2 hr before food for two days with almost immediate relief..

Hello Baskaran,

Good to hear this remedy worked for you. Another important remedy for hyperacidity (which gets worse at night) is Robinia. Esp. when the acidity is accompanied by a frontal headache and is worse at night (keynote !) often with irritating eructations and sometimes vomiting (sharp and greenish vomit). Also sometimes colic and flatulence.
