Dear readers,

I like to ask again the question what are Miasms? Not a description but a good definition! I have read this question before in this forum (asked by dr_bhatia ). However, it is probably very difficult to get a good answer on this question. The answers I have read in this forum are not anymore related to the root of the question “what are Miasms”. I think a good discussion about this subject would be very valuable.

Best regards

Alex Bos.

Cool

Hi Alex, I also repost my first question. That discussion went off the track. I hope it will stick to right path this time.

When we ask someone, "What are miasms?", we usually get the answer, "Miasms are the fundamental cause of all diseases." or "Miasms are the factors which predispose us to diseases.". But these answers tell us about the effect of miasms and not what they stand for. Its like asking someone "What is an apple?" and getting the reply "An apple a day, keeps the doctor away." instead of "An apple is a fruit." Think over it.

I always thought "miasms" were an older concept in medicine, a theory about chronic and congenital disease.

The word comes from "miasma", which is a cloud of vapour or noxious gasses which literally hangs over a swampy area like a cloud of its own pollutions. The image itself brings to mind all those swampy, malarial places--which would be a kind of miasmatic illness in itself.

Isn't a miasm simply a disease which manifests in different ways and can be passed on genetically? It seems there is a tendency to make this much more complicated than it is, and this sometimes gets in the way of effective treatment.

A miasm can be induced by having a disease, by vaccination etc.

Here is the famous Subrata Banerjea's definition. I have had the pleasure of attending uite a few of his lectures and at least 2 on miasms! Now take a deep breath before reading this!

"I define Miiasm as an invisible inimical dynamic principle (infecting agent/inimical principle or dynamis) which permeates into the system (dynamic plane) of a living creature and creates a groove or stigma in the constitution, which can only be eradicated by a suitable anti miasmatic treatment. If not, it will persist throughout the life of the person and will be transmitted to the next generation.""

He goes on to say 1)miasm =infecting disease
2)Miasmic disease = disease reaction following infection with a miasm 3) Chronic miasm = infecting agent capable of producing chronic disease reactio in an organism

There are also Acute miasms a) cholera, typhoid, pneumonia diptheria etc b) Fixed miasms e.g. miasms of whooping cpugh , smallpox c) half spiritual miasms e.g. measles, scarlet fever etc. Then the Chronic miasms a) endemic fevers b) psora. c) syphilis d) sycosis e) drug miasms f accessory miasm of cow pox vaccine)
