Default Not the sort of care

one would wish for!!

A woman found maggots wriggling on her dying mother's face while she was treated in a hospital's intensive care unit, it emerged yesterday. Nyree Ellison Anjos spotted the fly larvae near a feeding tube at the Gloucestershire Royal hospital. Her mother, Christine Ellison, died soon after.
Her daughter spoke out yesterday after learning that another part of the hospital had to be fumigated when maggots were found on a sandwich. Mrs Ellison Anjos, from Robinswood, Gloucester, said she noticed that her mother seemed uncomfortable and kept touching her nose. She said: "She had a tube inserted in her nose and I saw something. It was yellow and it was wriggling. There was a big black fly buzzing around."
Realising that maggots were in one of her mother's nostrils, she rushed to find a nurse. "I said to the nurse that there were maggots in her nose. They took us to a room and said they were very sorry - it should not have happened."
Christine Ellison, 59, who had a liver condition and was being treated for an infection, died two days later.
A spokeswoman for the Gloucestershire Hospitals Foundation Trust said: "A very small number of maggots, each the size of a pinhead, were found. The incident was incredibly rare and we took immediate steps to prevent it happening again. We have always been commended for our high standards of cleanliness and hygiene and take any incident such as this extremely seriously.
"At no time was Mrs Ellison's treatment compromised. We would like to offer our sincere apologies to the family."
The incident happened in July, but Mrs Ellison Anjos, 34, who works for social services, came forward after reading in her local newspaper that a treatment room at the hospital had to be fumigated in October after maggots were found on a discarded sandwich. It was thought the fly larvae had been feeding on a sandwich which was found by the side of a desk.
The Liberal Democrats' health spokesman, Steve Webb, said: "The hospital management has some serious explaining to do. Action must be taken."
