Nephews Leg cramps and joint pain
My sister-in-law sent me this message:
a week ago Jack woke up in the middle of the night with leg pains. We thought growing pains so gave him massages at night, motrin, etc. Well that went on every other night for 3 nights. Then one day he couldn't walk and I picked him up at school & took him to the dr. who sent us to the orthopedist who said he has acute synovitis, which is an inflamation of the hip, more common in boys than girls ages 3-10 & it causes acute pain to the joints, especially the knee. Cure.....7-10 days bed rest. Yea, right. He's 6. Try and keep a 6 yr old laying flat for 7-10 days. So that seemed to get a little better. Over the weekend we surprised the kids and took them again this year to the Great Wolf Lodge (a HUGE indoor water park). Had a blast. Sunday Jack said his stomach hurt...ok too much fun and chocolate. Monday same thing but I sent him to school. Monday evening hurt really bad, legs, can't walk. Vomit when I gave him motrin. Now I'm thinking apendix. Ted came over Monday night cause his son (who is now 17) had the same thing when he was 6. He said no school & tylenol & heat pad. Helped a little. Last night he woke up at 3am in so much pain I almost took him to the hospital. John slept with him then I took him to the dr. this morning. NOW, can't move hands, fingers or ankles & foot swollen & throat sore, no fever, can't walk. Went to the lab, took blood & just heard from the dr. Most of the tests came back so I call in the am for the results of the rest. So far, white count good. Inflamatory & platlettes elevated. His thought at this point is Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. So I am taking him to the Cleveland Clinic tomorrow (voted one of the nations top 4 best hospitals in the annual "Americas Best Hospitals" survey) to see a pediatric rheumatologist. I guess that wasn't such a short story after all. I just feel so bad for him cause he hurts so bad, we feel helpless. He can't even sit in the car.
