Default Validated treatment for ADHD

Hello!

I am new to this forum and would like to ask for some direction. I am a child therapist and I had a mom ask me recently what I knew about homeopathic treatments for ADHD. It was a short conversation, but I am always willing to research and learn -- that's why I'm here.

I have not heard nor read much positive results regarding the treatment of ADHD with OTC options. I am coming from a hard-science background and would only be comfortable suggesting a substance if it has been through randomized clinical research that shows a strong degree of cause and effect.

With that in mind, can anyone here direct me to a site that will meet my standards so I can learn more about non-rx treatment options?

Thank you,

Jim1970

Hi Jim, this information may be useful for you.
There is an integrated multidisciplinary approach to treating these cases with homeopathic remedies as the only drug treatment, developed in Mumbai by Dr. BArvalia. I will be writing up an interview with hik giving more details that will appear in a couple of weeks. that should give you a better idea. So I'll post that link when its printed.

hi jim,

i am a therapist also, in general practice including a special interest in kids. the past several years i have developed a strong interest in homeopathy, although as i am not licensed to prescribe, i have not used homeopathy directly in my practice.

you will not find, in your searches, much that is encouraging for homeopathy in randomized, statistical research: nearly all such studies have show poorly for homeopathy, and those that have shown well seem uniformaly to be nitpicked to death for methodological shortcomings. if you look in my profile for my history of posting, you will find numerous discussions of this issue, many of them quite heated, i'm afraid, but perhaps useful to you anyway ... perhaps as a therapist, you have more capacity for drawing insights out of case studies, than many research scientists seem to have.

you might also try the popular book, ritalin free kids, by judyth reichenberg-ullman and robert ullman. truthfully, i am not fond of this book, but many homeopaths recommend it highly, and it gives a broad survey of the subject.

usually the scientifically-inclined want to see specific applications of homeopathic remedies: what remedy will cure adhd? or arthritis pain? or whatever. but remedies are individualized, as are therapeutic interventions, and asking the question in that way is like asking you to identify which dream interpretation will cure separation anxiety?

the problem of research in homeopathy is a thorny one, as thorny as in dream work, so i recommend you give a wider berth to formal research than you might ordinarily like to do, in particular, since your patient's mother seems to be asking specifically about homeopathy, rather than about otc treatments in general.

jim,

if you would like to help your client in finding out more about homeopathy and adhd (like, does it work) i suggest you help her find a good homeopath that will take the case and handle the prescribing!

my son was dx'd adhd a little over a year ago. we briefly tried adderrall and then decided to look at alternatives. since then we have been using homeopathy to treat his adhd symptoms. we work with a wonderful homeopath and are in what i think, are the final stages in his treatment.

does homeopathy work for adhd? of course it does when the correct remedy (ies) are found and the case is managed properly. are there "adhd remedies"? well i cannot answer that as i'm not a homeopath but i would say that there are remedies that seem to address many aspects of childhood problems. i.e nightmare, fears, obstinance, temper tantrums.

paul herscu has written many books on adhd, autism and more. your client may be able to find these at her local library.

you'll not find any "hard science" here but she may find help in homeopathy just the same.
