Hello everyone,
I am currently travelling in India. 6 weeks ago, I got diahorrea after eating train food. Symptoms were profuse watery diahorrea in morming only before and after breakfast, 3-4 times. I tried arsecinum and china without success. I went to a homeopath who prescribed aloes 1m, sulphur 200, and phos acid 30. Symptoms improved for 2 days and reappeared. I went back to homeopath and was prescribed aloes and vert alb which failed to cure. Over the next 3 visits I was prescribed nux vom, popodulum (spelling?) thuja, nat sulph, tubercullinum, lycopodium amd kali something, all to no avail. I had a stool test which diagnosed bacterial infection 7/8 pus cells. I went to an ayurvedic doctor and took various pills for 10 days, again to no avail. I have no appetite and am starting to loose weight. I need to eat a lot of food to keep my weight up anyway. I feel my only option is to take antibotics which I am loathe to do. Any help would be greately appreciated. Miah. |

HI! Miah,
In my opinion you've taken too many medicines in too short a time before any one of them could have induced its action. 2ndly you haven't mentioned about the kind of food that you had on the train.Did you have some kind of contaminated water or ice,cut fruits or fried stuff? Also do mention about the kind of stools that you have...is it absolutely watery? what is the colour? Is there a presence of any blood and/or mucous in stools? Do you have loose stools only in the morning? how is your thirst? do you feel thirsty often or are you thirstless? There are many medicines for loose stools in homeopathy but proper case taking is essential for the right prescription. If possible,do consult a good homeopath.DO TAKE ADEQUATE AMOUNT OF WATER ADD SOME ELECTROLYTES TO IT BEFORE DRINKING IT...as your body has already lost a lot of fluid and electrolytes with it. All the best and get well soon. |

Hi Nups,
Thanks for reply. I ate a thali (fried food) on the train and had a few cups of chai. 20 mins after eating thali, the diahorrea came on. The diahorrea is 90% watery, was orignally brown is now yellowish with profuse odour. I get it 3-4 in during mornings. Very occassionally i get it during the day. I am very thirsty, very hot and lots of perspiration on underarms, back and genitial area. (usual for me). A major symptom seems to be my lack of appetite and if I eat, I feel nauseous. Homeopath I saw was recommended, (19 years experience), he said he has never come across this before. After 5 visits, I lost faith. I have tried to find another homeopath without much luck (currently staying in Rishikesh) Any advice would be mush appreciated. |

Hi! Miah,
Since you are in Rishikesh, finding a good homeopath would be difficult although not impossible. You can try these medicines for a few more days and take care of the kind of food that you eat. According to your symptoms Arsenic alb.30c seems the right medicine but since you've already taken it without any relief, Mercurious Solubilis 30 seems to be the next option for you...take it every 4hours for 2 days and see the result. But before all this take 1 dose of Nux vom 200c before going to bed. Take care of your diet. Green coconut water is very good for the stomach and helps in dealing with the fluid loss too. All the best! |

Since your system is weakened, be very careful to avoid reinfection. Any single intestinal infection that doesn't make you dangerously ill, will only last for a few days, so by now you have probably had several.
Be careful to drink only water that is bottled or boiled, but drink lots. Electrolytes are a good thing, but not essential yet. Since you are in a warm climate, nourishment is not important for some time yet, but try to get some sugar, for instance via a (bottled) soft drink. Otherwise don't try too hard to eat till you appetite returns (you body knows what is good for it). Be careful what you do eat, it must be with low fat content, not spicy, and of course bacteria free, which means well-cooked. Soup and bread are good things. Get as much rest as you situation allows. Once you start to recover, youghurt tablets that help restoring your intestinal flora will help you along. If you do choose antibiotics, remember to take the whole cure. Most problems with antibiotics come because people, usually from being reluctant to use them, stop taking them as soon as they improve. This means that whatever germs survive will be the ones most resistant, and you are going from the ash into the fire. It is important to achieve what is medically termed an overkill. Good luck! Hans

miah,
I am a staunch classical homeopath. however, if things are not working, for any reason - go see a allopath. you are not in a foreign land to suffer. don't take a risk away from home. also take LACTOBACIL capsules (lactobacillus) along with any medication that you make take. take one cap a day daily. drink bottled water (kinley or aquafina brand only). btw - if you are in india and interested in spirituality, check www.dhamma.org and www.vri.dhamma.org it is the best and highest meditation system india has to offer to the world. it is the universal non-sectarian scientific meditation called vipassana. dr manish agarwala india |

Good advice, Dr M A.
I'd like to add one more thing: Hygiene. Often diahorrea patients keep re-infecting themselves. Wash your hands carefully and often, use plenty of soap. Always after visiting the toilet and always just before you eat. A simple thing that is easily forgotten in the misery of it all .Hans

A good homeopahtic remedy can very well take care of this, much better than ANY antibiotic. See a better homeopath who can observe the characteristics for a remedy. I cant imagine that a homeopath with 19 years experience has not seen this type of diarrhea!
Merc Sol was a good suggestion. NO need for antibiotics.

Hello Gina, Nups, Hans and Dr Manish.
Thank you so much for your advice aand support. I can buy remedies on Monday as everything is shut here for a few days. I will take the nux vom followed by merc sol. If no success, I'll reluctantly take antibiotics. The prescription has been lying in my bag for two weeks now and somehow I just cant get myself to the pharamacy, even though allopathic doc who arranged stool test advised antibiotics is the only thing that will clear it.Nups- I began taking electrolytes this am. Absoutely delicious. Unfortunately, no coconuts in Rishikesh, but I'll dream about them, a fav drink of mine. Gina, I saw a couple of posts on this board saying you did a course with Dr Banerajea in Calcutta. Funnily enough, I did that course in January and it was on the train from Calcutta to Rishikesh when I first got sick. Great course. I've only completed the first year of my homeopathy studies in London, hence why I really want homeopathy to work and why I need advice regarding remedies. I had no luck in finding charcoal tablets this am, will try again on Monday when all shops are open. Hans- Thank you for advice, I will heed it. I needn't feel so guilty now , when I have a bottle of sprite. I hope you are enjoying my country. I'm Irish but based in London and on a year out in Inida. Dr Manish - I love your country, Its my 6th trip to India and it feels like I'm home, especially in Rishikesh. The spirituality of India feeds my soul and I'm soo happy to be here. I'm currently attending daily teachings at Sachadam Ashram- The abode of Truth in Laxmansjula. Its Teachings are about non duality and that every being is Totalality. The resident guru is an 82 year old man who is marinating in love and is SATCHITANANDA. (thats saying something cause I can be a cynical old soul when it comes to Self Realizied gurus). They had a vipassana retreat there about three weeks ago but I could not do it because of my busy gurgling ..etc intestines. I did a vipassana retreat in Thailand a few years ago. A complete, simple and direct technique to quiten the mind, but it's soo difficult to achieve. Any remedies recommended for meditation? I plan to do one in Gujarat (apparently Goenke said that Gujurat's center will be the longest standing center in the world) in June time. Before that I plan to stay in Naturecure, an organic and alternative therapies center (owner runs the vipassana center in Gujarat) for a month to try and cleanse and heal my intestines. Will keep you all posted on the busy belly malarkey. Kindest regards Miah. |
