Question

Can anyone help?
I am treating a man for infertility probs and was going to suggest a zinc supplement.
I'm sure I have read somewhere to take 25mg 3 times a day. However as the RDA is only 15mg daily I'm a bit hesitant.

Is the RDA different in other countries ?

Are there different types ?

Zinc deficiency is common in developed countries.

Yes he may take 25mg three times a day for special supplemental purposes, but it must be with food. Supplement doses are 25 mg to 100 mg daily. If taken on an empty stomach zinc will cause nausea. Zinc is less bioavailable with milk, eggs and cereal.

Calcium decreases absorption of zinc, this is why not to take zinc with milk. So take the supplement with veggies for best absorption. Usually a three month period will replenish the body and then zinc rich foods included in the diet.

Symptoms of zinc deficiency are acne, alopecia, amnesia, anorexia, apathy, brittle nails, delayed sexual maturity, depression, eczema, fatigue, growth impairment, hyercholesterolemia, hypogeusia, impaired wound healing, impotence, irritability, lethargy, memory impairment, paranoia, sterility, and while spots on the nails.

In our area the underground water pipes are copper and copper also inhibits the absorption of zinc. Homosexuals are deficient on serum tests for zinc and it is crucial to make male hormones.

Essential fatty acids are also needed for making hormones.

Make sure the diet has zinc foods in it on long term basis.
Foods rich in zinc :
Oysters, eastern -- 3 ounces 150 mg
Crab, king --- 4 ounces 9 mg
Beef, cooked --- 4 ounces 6 mg
Wheat germ --- 1/4 cup 4 mg
Turkey, cooked --- 4 ounces 4 mg
Lamb, cooked --- 4 ounces 4 mg
Pork, cooked --- 4 ounces 3 mg
Cashews or almonds --- 1 cup 3 mg
Beans (legumes), cooked --- 1 cup 3 mg
Chicken, cooked --- 4 ounces 2 mg

Thanks to responders
Carole- for the life of me I can't find where I read about the 25mg 3 times daily- it was just there in the depths of my brain!
Was it something GM used to advise ?

Problem is now the staff in the shop where he went to buy the supplement have filled him with fear- telling him about all the bad effects too much zinc can have.So he will probably stick to the 15mg daily as the RDA.
Fortunately I have him on his constitutional remedy and am also treating his wife so hope to see some success soon!

Yes that is interesting about fear with a lot of individual nutrients. In the 1970's, for severe acne before I was so knowledgeable about homeopathy a famous nutritionist in North American used to use 100Mg of zinc three times a day and the only toxic effect recorded was the temporary nausea. That is over kill and I do think it would be harmful! especially long term.
I checked back and GM said (I quote) "For the man:....50mg zinc pr day, regardless of homeopathic remedies."

I do use less and less supplements for patients now. But encourage them to get specific nutrients from food. It will be in a form that will be absorbed and the constitutional remedy will definitely help.

my son took 150 mgs of zinc a day when he started getting pimples..maybe about a week...and sounds, any sound was experienced as piercing through his ears. He then told me what he was doing...and the homeopathic doctor gave him l0M zinc and that night he woke up from scratching his head so hard that it was bleeding...the next day he was fine. He NEVER got another pimple. And the white spots on his fingernails that he'd had since birth..disappeared over the next six months. I've told this story so many times on this bb I hope I'm not making someone throw up.

Thanks Carole for the info about not taking Zinc with milk - I knew about not taking Iron with tea but not this one. I will see if I can persude my husband to stop taking his 50mg of Zinc in the morning with his breakfast cup of tea with milk!!
10Omg is often suggested for men with prostate problems so 75mg must be OK.
