Potency is not a routine thing - it must be adapted to each and every case, much the way a remedy is chosen. You must assess the need for repetition of dose according to the reaction of the patient.
If the patient is improving, and especially while they are improving, you do not increase the potency, or even repeat the same potency. You only repeat if the patient stalls in their progress or relapses. You generally increase the potency if repeating the same potency does not help. Using higher potencies may also be necessary if the patient is in a life-threatening emergency situation. EVERY potency may be useful according to the individual situation. The only thing we are trying to achieve is to create an artificial disease that is of greater power than the natural one already expressed by the person. Since different people express a disease at different intensitites, different potencies may be needed. To throw out a specifice potency of a remedy is crazy. There is still much superstition in homoeopathy (like never use Lycopodium at 200c, never use Causticum after Phosphorous, never eat within 15 mins of taking a remedy, don't wear perfume while under treatment etc. etc.)This superstition hampers the development of homoeopathy.
