Hi everybody

I wanted to know if I can use Calendula ointment for the nappy rash of my 2 month old baby.

I have the usual array of nappy rash creams (allopathic) but want to use Calendula instead.

Anything better or any ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks and best regards.

Fitness,
There are three elements here. The first is to remove the environmental cause of the diaper rash. If possible, it often helps to let the child go without a diaper outside in the sun. If you have a patio or small yard, this may be a possibility. Along with this, scrupulous attention to freguent changes of diaper and the typs of diaper used. Often, children who are prone to diaper rash do better with disposables that wick away the moisture from the skin.

The second area to consider is a constitutional remedy. Why is it that some children get diaper rash and some don't? It's important to address the susceptibility. The complete case would include the diaper rash and how she reacts to it, what it looks like, etc., but much else about her general reactions and behavior.

The third (and really the last, not the first thing to consider) is to help her be more comfortable during the acute episodes and for that some soothing calendula is one of the least innocuous things you can use.

Shirley

Thanks a lot for the advice.

The rash is quite less and we have already done the first part i.e. remove the environmental cause. As of now we don't think that she is more than usual susceptible to rash. Since this was very mild and first time so I thought that just some ointment would be all that is needed.

As the rash has been very less so she is indifferent to it completely and behaving normally. What other info would be needed to for constitutional remedy, if that is needed in future, so that I gather the info and look for those symptoms.

Best regards.

Hi Fitness,

You would have to approach a young child the same way you would take a case for an animal. Just watch for anything slightly different about her behavior, reactions to things or sleep patterns. Also if anything is unusual even if it is her normal behavior. If everything seems completely fine, you could approach it as an essence case, although that also is difficult with young children.

Also, FYI, do not use talcom powder or products that contain talc because there are some indications that it may be detrimental. I read about it several years ago, but can't remember exactly what was said.

We use the talcum powder fairly regularly and has been used as long as I can remember on nearly all the infants that I know of. We haven't witnessed any ill effect neither did our pediatrician warn against it.

If you can recall or at least point to some direction regarding its negative effects that would be great.

Regards.

Now that we are discussing babies, I have one more question, why some babies have blue patches on or above their buttocks when they are newborn and they seem to get ok by themselves as they get old.

P.S: I noticed that the option to post a new topic is not appearing on my browser. What's going on.

Hi Fitness,

SHirley is correct. Back here parents are warned by their pediatricians not to use talcum powder anymore. This began fairly recently, within the past 10 years. Keep the little bottom as dry as possible with lots of fresh air getting to it.
