I don't think you have to wait until after the antibiotics...I'd give her ledum 200c for sure if you only gave 30c...maybe even a few doses ...but I'd defer to a homeopath for further doses..here or there.

Ledum is the genus epidemicus remedy for Lyme Disease, yes. Lyme disease can result from exposure to deer ticks--but (and I must stress this) it is not the same as being stung by a bee, or bitten by a spider or an ant. It is more than just an insect bite, which can be handled quite effectively by healthy people in an acute phase.

Lyme disease results from a tick bite--but it is not the bite which is the big issue here.
It is the disease itself--its signs and symptoms, its progression, which can be curtailed by the ledum.

With Apis, you have a similarity to the histamine reaction produced by a bee sting, for example--the swelling and redness, the intense pain and the severity increase via exposure to heat. You have your typical histamine reaction signs--a foreign protein enters the body and the body mounts a reaction in order to contain its spread, limit its influence, and eliminate the by-products of this defence. The same thing happens with ant bites, and often with insect bites like those from mosquitos. Spiders's venoms are more difficult to contain, and produce different reactions in the body--tissue can change as it becomes infected, septiceamia can set in (which is infection on a deeper level). Ledum is more appropriate for this type of infection for the same reason it is an effective prophylactic for tetanus; it can stop the procreation of anaerobic microbes deep in the tissues so that surface tissue healing does not result in severe complications.

Lyme disease actually has symptoms which are dis-similar from these ones--as I said, the microorganism associated with it is a spirochete, and actual organism, not just a "foreign protein" or a poison--a very insidious, very deep acting, and especially tenacious organism. Like the spirochete associated with syphilis. Hence we see some similar signs and symptoms, over the progression of the disease (which occurs over weeks, months, and years), as we can see with syphilis. There is a much different energy from the acute histamine reaction of a bee sting or an ant-bite; and a different one still from the septic symptoms we may see with a spider bite. The symptoms we see in these situations are ones of an acute ailment--it flares up but resolves itself, limits itself either by self-cure or with death.

Lyme, on the other hand, becomes a chronic disease very quickly; any acute phase it has usually passes into a chronic phase without a curative resolution. It isn't really "enough" to treat that acute phase with this disease as it isn't the entire problem.

Enough cases of lyme have been documented and treated to bring up a genus epidemicus of this disease. I'm sure ledum isn't the only one, but you can see how it is suitable.

For God's sake, give Ledum! If you've got 30C, give it 3 times a day for three days, preferably in water with succussions before each dose.

If there's an aggravation, stop the remedy.

Yes, gpm, Divina. What would we do without her?

Thanks for the explanation Divina.

One thing does crop up in my mind, though. With genus epidemicus -- there is usually more than one remedy - because the symptoms are not always exactly the same. So, I wonder what other remedies came up in Will's study?! There must have been others.....

Also what do you make of things now that Sue's mother has had antibiotics?

Best regards - Austin

I'm still not convinced there is enough information with which to choose a remedy.

Hi,
She had to take the antibiotics. Nothing else was working. She was getting too weak, she could barely walk. She took 3 capsules and is feeling stronger. Should she be taking the ledum 30 with the antibiotics to make sure all the effects of the tick are gone? Should she be taking something to clear any effects of the antibiotic from her system?

Thanks,
Sue

Sue,

I'm glad to hear the antibiotics are working.
It's just possible that the Ledum prescription was too weak, or maybe as Austin said, a remedy may have matched the specific or peculiar symptoms she was putting out, like Gelsemium.

We recently had one of our members go through a similar situation--"Fitness First". Her daughter was vaccinated (kind of like an animal bite, when you think about it!) and the child was screaming and there was a huge swelling at the injection site, but "Fitness" bravely tried and tried after Ledum had failed, and finally thought to give Hepar Sulph, which greatly reduced the pain, and then she tried Hypericum and the child recovered completely!

So, in these acute situations, the right approach is sometimes fought long and hard for; the first remedy doesn't always work, eventhough well-indicated. So, to answer your question, I think we'll have to wait and see how she feels after the course of antibiotics is completed and we see what we're left with. I think as Austin said, it's not unusual for these things to come roaring back as soon as the antibiotics are finished; or,
for the "disease" to take on a strange form. We once had a mother write in who said, "My son has sinus headaches every day!" It turned out that this child had the flu 2 weeks previously and was given antibiotics. Now he no longer had the flu but he had these headaches in its place. We prescribed for the flu, gave gels. and the headaches stopped.

I anxiously await the opinion of others.

why hello snoops. I agree with ya. I think at this point we should hold off on any remedies until a new picture develops. No need to "clear" the antibiotics without a symptom picture to prescibe on.

Sue, in answer to your question about how to protect against the antibiotics--acidophilus would be an obvious suggestion.

Any other suggestions people?
