Question

hello all,
Today I went for a muscle testing and the person told me that my body is very acidic. Because of that, my baby is acidic too and my breastmilk is makng her sick. She id full of mucus and she is having trouble breathing.
Anyway, my CNHP want me to stop breastfeeding for 10 days and cleanse my body with Tao He (sp?) and some other things. In the meantime, she wants me to give my baby enriched rice milk for formula until i hve finished my cleanse.
Has anyone heard of this? Does anyone have suggestions? I am very concerned about giving her rice milk for 10 days.
thanks for your help!
Courtney

Hi Courtney

What are your babies symptoms exactly? I would be very wary of the recommendations you were given to stop breastfeeding. Has your child been vaccinated? I so, when was the last shot given?

Very good questions Barb!

Hello fellow Philadelphian! Please tell us what sort of breathing problems the child has, what's the child's presentation? Describe what the child looks like; what hour of the day or night is worse for the child? What seems to help the child feel better, and what makes the child feel worse?

What's the disposition like? The child's nature.
As Barb said, is this a problem since vaccination?

Thanks,
Snoopy

She has problems breathing all times of the day. You can hear the mucus in her body. It sounds like she is gasping for air when she sleeps. Also, she spits up all or most of her food after she eats. She becomes gassy and fussy after eating. Other than that, she is a very good baby. She has not had any of her vaccines other than her hepititus B which was given in the hospital. I am really not sure what to do because I know my body needs to be cleaned out, but I can't do that and breastfeed. Any suggestions?

Have you got access to a breastfeeding counsellor??? Interfering with breastfeeding while it is becoming established could cause problems when you try to return 10 days later. It might be difficult to maintain you r milk supply - unless you intend to use a breast pump and discard the milk. However it is difficult to gauge how much to pump out, as the baby is only 4 weeks old. If you are 100% towards breastfeeding, I would advise you to seek further advise and expect problems trying to maintain your milk supply if you suddenly stop for 10 days. You could also suffer from engorement, as it is best to decrease milkflow gradually, not suddenly. The delicate balance of supply and demand for breastmilk can be fragile until breastfeeding is more established (older baby). However, you need to weigh up the situation and try to work out what will be best for you both. If you need any more information on lactation give me a shout.
Incidently , my 2nd son suffered from severe congestion from birth, and a visit to the homeopath and cranial osteopath did wonders. Did you have a very fast or difficult labour???

...Also, if you introduce a bottle for 10 days the baby might be reluctant to to back to the breast as they are 2 very different ways of sucking.

Good luck anyway.

Hi Caroline!
Thanks for your response. I had a VERY easy labor. I was only in for 2 hours and I only pushed twice. She is really sick and I am convinced that my breastmilk is making her this way. She can't keep any of it on her stomach. She spits up curds of it. She is either constipated or she has diahrrea. I really want to breastfeed and the homeopath I saw suggested that I clean my system out and pump milk for 10 days during the cleansing. Then after the cleansing, things should be fine. My problem is this, she can't stomach the formula either and because of this, the homeopath wants me to make my own formula using enriched rice milk, brown rice syrup and water. I do not feel comfortable giving my child this because she is so young. I don't think that will give her enough nutrients but then again, if she is throwing up everything I give her, she isn't getting nutrients from that either. I am really at a loss for what to do because I really want to breastfeed, but I want my child to remain healthy and not be sickly like she is. Do you have any suggestions? Do you know of any homeade formulas I can make? Anything you can tell me will be helpful.
Thank you so much for your help!
Courtney

I have a couple of suggestions. If you're eating any dairy or wheat products, stop now. You can pass along the antigens to the baby and she could have become allergic to your milk.

Also, get a good lactobacillus formula for babies and try to get that into her however you can.

Hope this helps.

i had help from the local LaLeche League meetings for my very rocky breastfeeding start with my VERY gassy, colicky baby. i eliminated dairy, wheat and the obvious gassy foods from my diet for 5 months. the baby had colic for 4 months and threw up seemingly all that went in - however, that is only a mom's perception and in reality she was gaining slowly, but enough for it not to be a problem. it is surprising how much stays in despite the massive spit ups babies have. you could perhaps take an ounce of water (or milk) and spill it and see how much that is and so compare it to the spit ups. when my daughter was 4 months old, her digestive troubles stopped from one day to the next. for me it was perhaps the hardest time in my life, but i hung in there and kept breastfeeding for 2 years altogether.

in addition to the comments from the others above, i doubt very highly, that your breastmilk is the main culprit. furthermore, i'm very certain that "enriched rice milk" is not nourishing enough for a 4 week old baby. usually, for such a sensitive undeveloped digestive system like your baby's i doubt that anything other than breastmilk would be the best solution. do be careful before stopping to breastfeed, for your child's sake. perhaps a second opinion from another (classical) homeopath is in order ?

In a large percentage of these cases this problem occurs because the child is a little under developed and over sensitive.

Often a cal-c will resolve this problem rather quickly but there are a few other possibilities and a classicla homeopath should be able to find the remedy to resolve this quickly.

Good luck
