Yesterday, many members from homeopathyhome and other doctors came from Punjab province participated in one week long workshop. It was the first day. Dr. Salama Siddique Iffat, Ph.D (Clinical Psychology), Asst Prof Karachi University, Quaid Azam University Islamabad was the resource person. She came to the workshop with her husband Major Dr. Rashid Qayum (Psychiatrist Combined Military Hospital CMH, Jhelum). Major Dr. Afzal, MBBS (Sonologist) with his wife Homeopathic Lady Dr. Khilda also participated in the workshop. Dr. Salam delivered a wonderful lecture on Stress management.

First she defined stress in urdu language and presented slides with help of viewgraph. I noted the following tips.

Problem: DEMOTION
Short Term Solution: Accept at once complain. Discuss the reasons clearly with your suprior.
Long Term Strategy: Look for another job or make the best of your new position. Try to excel and get repromotion

Problem: PERSONALITY CLASH AT WORK
Short Term Solution: Avoid confrontation wherever possible. Be assertive and not hostile. Reprot the problem to the next suprior along. Write a formal complaint, setting out the problems. Make an appointment to see the person concerned and state clearly and politely what the problem is as you see it - be prepared to listen to the other person’s point of view but also state your own case clearly and forthrightly.
Long Term Strategy: Leave your job. Try to get the other person placed in another department. If the problem is truly serious and others back you up on your decision try to get the person to leave.

Problem: OVER WORK
Short Term Solution: Say “NO” sometimes. Do not take on too many responsilities or push yourself too far.
Long Term Strategy: Reassess and redefine your goals and expectations. Get enough sleep.

Problem: INTERVIEW
Short Term Solution: Have at least ten minutes consciously relaxing before the appointment. Concentrate on breathing and de-tensing jay, neck and shoulder muscles. Adjust hair and make up.
Long Term Strategy: Study autogenic training, practice meditation and other relaxation techniques, and try creative imagery to cope with nerves.

Problem: MOVING HOUSE
Short Term Solution: Sort out contents of one cupboard and room at a time. Be systematic. Be ruthless and throw out what you can. Do as much advance preparation as you can to avoid a rush on the day you move. Pack everything yourself if you want to save money.
Long Term Strategy: Don’t try to furnish the new home at once. Allow one full day free for the move itself. Get your friends and family to help to pack and unpack.

Problem: BURGLARY
Short Term Solution: Report to police at once. Don’t touch anything. Have a strong coffee or a cup tea. Let out your anger and aggression. Cry, shout. Write a list of missing objects and goods.
Long Term Strategy: Take extra precaution to secure your home including good quality locks on doors and windows. Leave lights on when going out.

Problem: DIVORCE
Short Term Solution: Ensure you have a good and sympathetic lawyer or solicitor. Keep in contact with friends and family. Keep busy. Get enough sleep and rest. Try to avoid tranquillizers.
Long Term Strategy: Divorce is a kind of bereavement, so follow the advice under bereavement, below. Try to get out meet friends. Travel. Study a new skill. Change job.

Problem: BEREAVEMENT
Short Term Solution: Cry, Talk, acknowledge your feelings and express them if you can. Try to avoid tranquillizers and if you do take them, do so for no more than about one month. Contact your lawyer.
Long Term Strategy: be prepared to go through a mourning period that ma last for as much as two more years, Recognize that my physical ailments, aches and pains may be related to this period of stress. Start to socialize.

Problem: WEDDING
Short Term Solution: Plan every thing carefully. Don’t arrange too many social activities immediately before the day and leave yourself ample time to make any last-minute arrangements. Get plenty of sleep. Avoid arguments with your partner and family. Around the time avoid foods that cause migraine or allergy. Try to fix the date that does not coincide with pre-menstrual tension or menstruation.
Long Term Strategy: Don’t expect perfection from yourself or your partner. Talk, laugh together. Find mutual interest. Discuss your views on children, religion, contraception, money, and other practicalities. This point is valid for Dr.MAS who is thinking about marriage.

Problem: MARITAL ROWS
Short Term Solution: Go away calmly and concentration on your breathing. Think things thorugh in private. Use humour. Get out of the house-go-running.
Long Term Strategy: Question your own attitudes. Don’t automatically blame yourself or your partner. Talk through the point of conflict at calm times. not while you are having a row. Be more assertive and not aggressive.

Problem: ROWS WITH CHILDREN
Short Term Solution: Avoid confrontation wherever possible, when there is a row; say no, quietly but authoritatively. Ask for an apology if child is in wrong. Give an apology if you are in wrong.
Long Term Strategy: Avoid the issue if possible. Lay down consistent rules and discipline. Be stricter. Be more assertive - It is a test of who is in control.

Problem: PROBLEMS WITH IN LAWS
Short Term Solution: Don’t lose your temper. Invite other friend to weekends, dinners, and family gatherings. Do something together outside the home, get in a supply of films or videos. Play trivial pursuit. Don’t make visit a regular frequent habit.
Long Term Strategy: Talk over with your partner. Be assertive with partner and in - laws. Try to empathize and gain confidence. Resist role playing or games. Give in sometimes for the sake of harmony.

Dr. Asif Javed was noting all homeopathic medicines which Dr. Inam and Dr. Mas told the audience. I will request him to tell something about them.

Dear M Iqbal

In a homoeopathic practice stress would have to come on its own in order to be tackled individually. Now this usually does not apply, hence you would have to deal with the person appearing in the practice. Stress may be one of the many symptoms the patient is suffering of, it may well be the entry ticket into homoeopathic therapy. The approach to treat a patient with stress is the same as treating a patient with chronic cough. Who is coming, what are the specific complaints in all detail, name all other complaints, assess the mental defilements, work out the previous medical history and the reason why someone might possibly be in the situation they are in.Get second opinions of close ones, get the medical history of siblings, parents, grandparents and other relatives. Where is the gravity of the case? Assess all intensities, modalities and generals. You will find that any pathology is due to stress, may it be environmental-personal-microbial-therapeutical-ancestral-etc. Therefore all homoeopathic remedies are indicated for stress according to similarity and all rubrics of the repertory may be consulted to treat a patient with stress.

Dear Stranger

This is my understanding to your question:

Tension: Sensation of the mind and/or body stimulated by external impressions

Anxiety: State of the mind due to internal disposition. This state is a response to a dilusion of the mind. There is no real external stress factor.

Frustration: Injury of the ambitous ego. The "I" doesn't shine. This process is reversibel by applying some ego polish,eg success.

Depression: High order suffering of the mind. The ego is rotting and dissolving within the patient. This is not the selfless state of the higher spiritual path. There is no need for external stimulation. This is an inborne state.
