I have recently done some research on Selenium as a homeopathic remedy for a College assignment. Basically, we could pick a remedy and write a report about it. I chose Selenium because it seems very popular as a dietary supplement and some research to show it has anti-cancer properties. Also, it seems that in the UK the 'natural' dietary intake of Selenium has reduced by 50% in the last 20 years. I wondered if a lot of people were deficient in Selenium was it was a commonly indicated remedy? Reading through the literature, I thought it could be a very useful remedy and I surprised that I had never seen it prescribed in clinics. It seems to share a lot of symptoms with Sulphur and one of our lecturers suggested that a patient needing Selenium might look like a 'broken down' Sulphur constitution. Selenium is the only Black type remedy in Kent's general rubric 'Old age premature' and also black type in the rubric 'Old People'. It seems to me that most of the writing about Selenium is in the older literature, although Scholten publishes some new ideas in his book 'The Elements'. The only published case of Selenium I could find was in Scholten. So, what is the experience of those experienced homeopaths using this bulletin board? Has anyone had any interesting Selenium cases that could be shared with the rest of us? Best wishes Therese |

Therese: If you are doing a work on Selenium, probably he is interested in knowing that the AFADH (French association doctor - homeopática Hahnemanniana to whom I belong), has an study on this remedy. You can read Frenchman or Spanish? I have difficulty with the Englishman, but here him I bring some of the important topics in this remedy:
- drunkenness - oblivion and recollection - topic of the work - expansion -Paresia - the Word - irritations - drunk(drink) - fingers in the orifices (nose, ear(hearing) ...) - sweats - spillages drop to drop - coitus - lack of coordination - it urinates 6 times the quantity that has drunk - impotence - table against the forehead - desire to sleep and impede to go out of the dream - skin - imagination - great talkativeness... Selenium, that sits dizziness as if it was intoxicated, has fear of the work and of the multitude. Irresistible desires to go to bed and to fall asleep when it is in half of the work. When it sleeps, it is as dead man, cannot wake up. Sensation that a hand him supports against the ear. Rigid and impotent. Worry continues. Profligate thoughts, but with impotence to physical level. I expect to could have helped him. A greeting. |

Dear Opium
thank you for this description of some of the important keynotes and sensations of Selenium. I am very interested if a study has been published. I have some homeopathic friends who speak Spanish and French so I would like to get the reference or web address if you have it. Then we can study it together. Best wishes Therese |

I send to the private message my direction e-mail
It is interesting if you can translate Frenchman or Spanish, I will send the work to the e-mail that you say to myself. The AFADH is a group of doctors that establishes in France, but of that there form a part doctors of several countries. We from Spain, for example. There follows the study of the medical matter from the approach kentista of the Dr. Masi Elizalde, of the Institute of High Studies Homeopáticos James Tyler Kent. At the moment it does not publish the material, but it gives himself all the partners. If he can read me in Spanish, I will explain to him with more detail route e-mail. Regards. [ 01. A big focus with selenium has to do with ailments after coition, sexual excesses, lasciviousness, etc. A good portion of the mind rubrics are related to those issues, and a major physical focus relates to the male organs of reproduction.
Some idea of selenium can be gained by reading Ovid's Erotic Poems--humorous poetry which also led to his banishment from Rome in 8 A.D. Here's a possible selenium history from his poems: "...There we lay, in bed, embracing, and all to no purpose: I was limp, disgusting, dead. Heaven knows I wanted it badly, and so did my partner, but still I failed to measure up... My member hung slack, as though frozen by hemlock, A dead loss for the game I'd planned. There I lay, a sham, a deadweight, a trunk of inert matter... What sort of old age shall I have (if I ever reach it) when I can't make out as a youth? It's not that long since I made it twice with that smart Greek blonde, three times with a couple of other beauties And as for Corinna, in one short night, I remember, she made me perform nine times, no less. Perhaps some Thessalian hell-brew has ruined my physical urges, maybe I'm a victim of spells and herbal concoctions. Perhaps some witch is busy transfixing my image, and name, in red wax, sticking pins through my liver... Ovid; The Erotic Poems; Penguin Classics pp. 149-51 . . . . Note to Ovid: Another thought--you've been a little too indulgent and now you're in a selenium state! |

Therese: you received my direction? I hope that you say to myself where I can send information about this remedy. I found also some cases. It would leave them here, but in Spanish nobody would understand. Someone reads Spanish?
David A. Johnson: The interesting of the comprehension of the remedy, it is to be able to think the coherence between(among) all the symptoms, the picture that joins the totality. In Selenium the key might be in a topic of vigor, of force, of not being able to work, and as you well he says, in the sexuality. It comes to the mental confusion after the coitus, has pollutions, sexual excesses, lewd fantasies with impotence. It becomes irritable after the coitus, during an emission, after the menopausea. Mental kneeling (deep depression) after sexual excesses, sadness after the coitus. You now can see since the topics join: loss of forces for espermatorrea drop to drop. I like his contribution. Very interesting the relation with the poem. Thank you for sharing it. Regards. |

David!
NOw that's some perspective on the remedy! One won't find that type of understanding in books. Really gets to the heart of Selenium, as Opium said. Thanks a lot. Interesting the reference to pins pricking into his liver, which is also a sphere of action of Selenium. Leela PS; Maybe David JK will have got over his New Year hangover and tell us about his Selenium case!
