a year old baby had surgery to open the skull because the bones prematurely fused together. This was a long surgery, baby had morphine afterwards for pain and had codiene as well. The surgery was 2 weeks ago.

Mom is concerned because since the surgery the baby has been "slow". She typically was very active, vibrant, lively and now is just"slow". Her movements are slow as well as mentally. Mom said that when she would see a picture of a something she likes she usually reaches for it and squeals in delight - since the surgery she looks at the picture and takes a longer time to process what it is and then will smile etc.

all advice welcome

Of course, Helleborus has this slowness. They're all good suggestions.

I might also consider opium, for the extreme shock of the surgery/anaesthesia...but other opium sx must be present.

Have had success using Baryta Carb on children with this kind of slowness in the past.

I would also go for Nat sulph. but would give a dose of Arnica first. I have seen Arnica do amazing things.

It sounds like the mind is out of the body - Arnica. The baby looks physcially at the picture but does not make the connection. Does the baby act like she has no pain at times but if actually touch or go to touch or baby gets in certian position does it act like in pain or fearful? Often arnica will act like nothing is wrong as if unaware of pains and at times will be clearly in pain or fear of touch or being approached.

Arnica is well known for not being able to easily make connections after this type of trauma. Also does baby have same motor skills - for example does she not use one arm or move one leg as much as another?

So I agree with Ricki on arnic first- probably a high dose 1m-10m and then wait and see if becoem fully alert again. Bar-c would be possible as follow-up if certian symptoms develop such as perspiraiton and some continued slowness. Opium usually is for when person still unconcious from a trauma not just unaware but since baby can eventually focus in and make connection probably not opium. Hell. doubtful. nat-s may also be good follow up but arnica state is considered 4th phase and would normally be given first.

In long run interesting point is why did bones fuse prematurely? Calc-f and otehr remedies that cause an over growth may want to be looked at for a constitutional remedy in the future once healing has progessed. It is interesting that some peopel will have adhesions, and other growths there whole life but what ever the reason homeoapthy can certianly help.

Good luck!
JO
