Unhappy

Hi, my two year son has developed really severe diarrhoea over the weekend. Despite being a homoeopath myself I am having no luck with helping him.

His symptoms at the moment are as follows - extremely foul smelling (sort of fishy or sour) stool which is yellow in colour. The stool is completely runny and will pour out of his nappy. It also has some lumpy (also yellow) bits in it and some mucus. He has had about 4 - 6 of these nappies over the last 24 - 30 hours. Just before passing a stool he will indicate that his tummy hurts and just after he is distressed. However once he has been cleaned up his mood is as if nothing has happened. He is still full of energy and seems happy. He is eating very little as this seems to aggravate the condition but is feeding from me still, taking ice blocks and drinking some water.

I am concerned that he's condition doesnot seem to be abating, it started with vomiting (two bouts) the day before. All in all I would say this is his third day of illness with diarrhoea. He has no fever.

Any suggestions - I have tried Arsenicum 6 and Podophyllum 30 a few repeated doses with no change really. Infact he had the worst stool after his second dose of Podophyllum.

My daughter and husband aslo had the same thing but improved greatly after Arsenicum. Any help would be really appreciated I hate the thought of him going all this time without eating and without any improvement.

Thanks again Sara

Dear Sara,

Just off the top of my head, as Podo. would have been my first guess, Natrum Sulph. is part of a small rubric: Rectum, diarrhea, amel., which is peculiar, so it's an important rubric. I believe the Nat-sulph color is yellow. Phos-ac. is in that rubric, and the desire for ice would support that.

Well there's 2 ideas for you, and I welcome others, as I'm sure you do too.

Sara, I just checked the Materia Medica, and
Nat-Sulph has a desire for ice and cold drinks, so, let's forget about phos-ac. I'm going for Natrum Sulphuricum all the way.

Nice choice Snoops.
I'd think of Calc Carb as alternative.
NAt Sulph if HOT, Calc Carb if Chilly.
All the best,

Dear Dr. Leela,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Calc carb. the one that's cheerful for being constipated and < after stool? Nat-s. has the peculiar symptom of
"cheerful after diarrhea". But, it's true that calc-c. covers a lot of children's complaints, so, we'll see.

Thanks so much for all your input - I really appreciate it.

Nat Sulph looks really good to me. Plenty of the key notes are there - he is sleeping now but I will start him on the remedy on waking and will let you know how things go. It's always great to see feed back on the BB after people have taken the trouble to put forward their suggestions.

Thanks again Sara

When Arsenicum doesn't work I would tend to go to Verat.

I also would have gone for Podo!! Does he need a dose of China if he is losing a lot of fluid? This would be indicated if has no energy.

Hi Ricky,

He's cheerful after diarrhea, a keynote of Nat-sulph, which also has the yellow liquid stool.

With veratrum you'd expect to see < after stool.
