Bailey isn't treating physical illnesses, he's treating mental/emotional illnesses. That's why he starts with ultra high potencies. Also in the 6th addition, Hahnemann said the LMs were the ideal potencies. They combine the best of both the high and the low potencies without the problems of either. However, he was still using some high potencies, as well as some low potencies. There are a lot of things to consider in choosing what potency to start with. If you have a child with a high fever who is in general good health and you have very clear indications for the remedy, you can give a 10M. If you have an elderly frail person who is also on some allopathic meds, you may start with a 6X several times a day. If there is tissue involvment, you start very low. If the center of the case is on the mental/emotional plane and there is no overt tissue problems, you start fairly high, like 200C. In all cases, you could probably give an LM with success and without harm if the patient can understand how to take it and is compliant.

The times I've tried LMs have not been real successful. I do try to explain them and give a written set of instructions, but patients often take them too frequently and aggravate or they tell me it's too much trouble and they'd rather go to their regular doctor and get something. So I've pretty much given up on them unless the person is fairly knowlegeable about homeopathy.

The important thing to remember about potency, is that it is not a fixed thing. Homoeopathy works only by doing one thing and one thing only - producing a similar artificial disease with greater power than the patient's natural disease. It must be of greater power so that it will displace the natural disease, and then vanish leaving behind the patient's normal healthy state. This means that there can be no rule for potency, as it will depend on the individual case, just as in choosing a remedy.

What is the relative strength or power of a disease, and how do you judge it? That is the question many homoeopaths struggle with throughout the early parts of their careers.

It is important to realise that strength of a disease is not just measured by intensity of symptoms. It is also measured by variety of symptoms, variety of modalities, the number of organs or levels of the person affected, the amount of time it has existed in the person, the number of generations affected in the person's family (miasms). These things need to be taken into account as well, and you will find that the more complex the case (more powerful the disease) the more necessary the higher potencies become.

Although the low potencies are fine to open a case, when you need to manage a case over several years, dealing with the chronic miasmatic state as well as all the acute manifestations, the high potencies become vital to maintaining good health.

I rarely find any patient remains at the 12c or 30c level for very long. Many stay at the 200c level for months, sometimes years. Most seem to get the most stability from 1M, and some then need to go on to 10M. I have rarely found the need to go on to 50M, but it does occasionally happen with deeply chronic cases.

After David's heavy discussion- I hesitate to continue the Alice in Wonderland again, but....

Thanks's Snoopy, I knew you wouldn't leave me out - maybe I dropped in later in the dream and Shirley did not notice. See, I was wearing such a nice frumpy dress GPM finally lent me (after I finished with the pet forum that is), she (Shirley) just could not recognize me!

Acutally, BArb you're right, with all the server changes for our h2h website, I've been having quite a few communication problems. So I think I got Snoopy's invite through you a bit late!

TO leave Alice alone for a little while (sigh),
Good to hear about Rahul Snoopy. BUT I may have given him a single dose of 200. So finally its what each of us are comfortable with in our experience. We get 6C here and then a straight jump to 30, then 200.
So, no continuation after 6C if one needs to move up slowly.
Also LM's are not avaiable so easily and definitely NOT all remedies. One cannot make an order of a remedy that is not made usually. That means in LM's, only polycrests are available with an effort.

Limitations that we have to work by!

David, I not only wish I were as articulate as you, but I also wish I had the depth of understanding of the case that you do. That was very well put. My explaination sounds so cut and dry in comparison, but in practice picking the potency is not so easy. Each person is very unique and many factors come into the decision.

Leela, Natural Health Supplies has LMs for the top 300 remedies. http://www.a2zhomeopathy.com/

Back to Alice, last night was our radio show and I was talking to Dr. Jim beforehand. I told him about my dream. He thought it was uncanny because the medical board called him the other day and are sending out some people Monday to check on one of his patient's records. It's the first time they've sent anyone in the six years since the clinic opened.

And Snoopy, I have noticed this phenomenan. I think it's the feeling of, " Well, Snoopy's here, so it's safe!"

So, Shirley, you were kind of doing the "if I prepare a nice meeting room, they will come" thing? Or, it could be the confidence that you will be backed up by that frumpy bunch. They will come to your dream, enjoy your event, with no need to invite them.....because they want to share with you and can be counted on if you want them. Nice! Now we have to find out who those infiltrators are! Trying to bring havoc to the lovely ladies, albeit a tad frumpy (think we have to leave the Cha Cha lady out of that part of it)....who ARE these 3 trouble causing people? How dare they try to invade our womanish circle?!

Now I'm trying to remember the last time I even wore a dress! Out of date or not.

Aside.....I apologize if my jokes about myself (re walker) were tasteless. I meant joking insult only toward myself and am sorry if it was offensive. Some of the best of the best in my life have had need for assistance and I did not mean to be callous. The rest of the picture of myself is accurate as presented!

one of the advantages of lm's is that psora mutates, sometimes [often] within the parameters of the action of the original remedy. in such an instance, the LM's are exactly the tool for the job.

HI Shirley, thanks for the reference.

Yes, I meant about prescribing for our local patients.
See for 1 drahm of pills in 30 potency, the cost is Rs 8. That should be in 25 cents!
To buy an Lm here, one gets about 25 grams (the smallest quantity) for Rs 50. Which is about 1 dollar. To buy a mother tincture of about 30 ml costs Rs 50, which is 1 dollar.

No Indian patient unles they are earning in dollars(!) would buy medicine for $12 or $15 or whatever that cost is for a hundred ml bottle of Lm. Its exhorbitiant. UNless of course I stock it and send them a few pills.

I recollect Chris posting the info of a Pharmacy in West Bengal for making these stock orders for practitioners. I may have to take that plunge sometime!

Thanks Anyway!

Shirley,

Did you remember? In your same dream, I handed over to you, a CD via a unrecognised person. On which the word "PERFECT" was written. Please post that CD to my friend BWV11 but not through PRIVATE DREAM SYTEM BUT ACTUAL POSTAL SERVICE.

Dear Snoopy & Company –

Well, presumptuous it may be, but I find myself having some opinions and would like to offer them here to hopefully a sympathetic, or at least a patient, audience. To begin with, my instinct was to agree with Snoopy about low potencies, but I’m becoming suspicious that the normal bell-curve applies. For a great many “average” cases, high potency and low potency prescribing may both be successful. For some “low average” cases, both strategies might work, but low-potencies might work somewhat better; for “high average” cases, the reverse might be true. At the ends of the curve, <4th percentile or >96th percentile, it might be imperative that only low- or high-potencies, respectively, be applied. This highly simplified scheme at least has the benefit of reconciling the apparent contradiction, that successful practitioners achieve positive results using disparate therapeutics.

Note also that Snoopy finds that when she reaches 10M or especially 50M, usually it’s the wrong remedy, and she goes back to the beginning with a complementary; David, to the contrary, finds that in severe cases, low potencies are only good for opening a case, but not long term management. Is it possible that overshooting the mark with too high a first prescription is balanced by the other risk, of persisting too long in low potencies?

Well, that’s for what its worth, notes from the barely initiated underground.

Anyway, Shirley, nobody picked up on, or at least nobody commented on my earlier hint at dream interpretation, when I said “…“…I think its time for me to stop by the club, and kick back with some of my buddies from the medical board.” How much does this guy from the medical board sound like me? You judge: one of the guys who “…showed up, acting like they were part of the group.” “The guy from the medical board [kept trying to get us to talk, but really] wanted to shut our little group down…but the guy was saying he was really interested in homeopathy.”

And then, why no invitations? Because none were needed. My thread was addressed to Snoopy (hence, the dream was about Snoopy), but I invited “…discussion from others….” Of course, in the discussion forum, that would include everyone. So-o-o-o?

Greetings, Dr. Shahzad.

Bach
