Question

Question on Aggravation of symptoms.

Let me explain my point of view first.

Homeopathic Aggravation occurs when the remedy is given at too large a dose. The patient's symptoms get worse or new symptoms are produced. The dose needs to be reduced or stopped. Aggravation means that the remedy is working but not properly. "Aggravation does not occur if the homeopathic remedy is given in low potencies which are gradually increased and modified by higher potencies." Reasons for its occurrence include; too large of a dose, new symptoms produced that make the disease worse, the vital force is weakened more by the large dose, and more side effects are produced. Generally, the disease gets worse until the remedy dose is adjusted.

However, aggravation of any symptom may occur temporarily. Theoretically, in severe cases of aggravation and in extraordinarily rare cases, the aggravation could be permanent and perhaps lethal. Aggravations can proceed in a suppressive manner. Anti-doting a homeopathic medicine is not always successful.
Aggravating symptoms are not new symptoms but rather, they are existing symptoms or a re-emergence of previously existing symptoms in the course of the patients lifetime. True aggravations, according to homeopathic philosophy, after lasting from a few hours to a few weeks, are followed by general amelioration.

How does it work exactly? This isn’t known. Homeopathic medicine works by a mechanism of action that is said to tune the patient’s vital force.

Kent said The special aggravation is a great help, but such observations are often found wanting, and the general rubric must be pressed into service.

My question is

“If a patient has fever of 101 F. (It is a symptom). If we select a similimum remedy. According to the positive aspect of aggravation.i.e. the fever symptom, or the level of temperature or reading will increase for a while from 101 F to 101.5 F or 102 F for short time. It may remain for hour or so. Am I right?

What do you say? Whether the temperature will increase or not on the prescription of True Similimum Remedy?

Maybe. Or maybe another aspect of the case will get worse and the fever subside. Or no aggravation may occur and the patient gets better. Or the fever may only go up so slightly for such a short time that it is not noticed.

Shirley Scrichman,

I am only interested in knowing that whether the temperature will rise or not, if the remedy fits perfectly to the patient. We have listened so many time that if a remedy fits perfectly. It will slightly aggravate the symptom.

Thanks for reply Dr. Aamir.

I know you voted for me during election.

If the potency is an exact match, it will not aggravate. However, it's rare that the potency is exact, e.g., what if the exact potency were a 317X. We usually only have 200X or 200C. And again, if there were an aggravation, it may be something other than the fever that aggravates. Also, the patient may have the subjective feeling of being hotter without the fever actually rising. We can only tell the results in retrospect. It is impossible to theorize ahead of the time precise response.

I read the whole question. It is the most tricky question. I think the initiator wants to ask us if the fever symptoms aggravate, then whether the temperature will rise or not.

My answer is surely with CAROL. The temp will never rise from any degree.

Please tell your view whether the temp will rise or not?

I think the fever will show its intensity and ultimately the temperature will rise.

Perhaps we would see a temperature rise IF the body needs it to over come the disease. If the body does not need to raise the temperature, then it will not.

Potency may also determine this, as it is necessary to create a stronger similar disease in order to destroy the natural disease.

I find that it is impossible to predict which symptom will aggravate, or even if any symptoms will aggravate at all. Children often develop fevers as part of a cure, while adults do more rarely. Fever is no more prone to an aggravation than any other symptom.

This is what Hahnemann says about what to expect in a homoeopathic aggravation (aph156):

"Meanwhile, expecially when the dose is not sufficiently diminished, there is seldom a medication (even one that is apparently fittingly selected homoeopathically) that does not bring to pass, in irritable and fine-feeling patients - a small new symptom - during the duration of its action. This is because it is almost impossible for the symptoms of the medicine and those of the disease to cover one another as exactly as two triangles with equal sides and angles."
