so my little M is slowly improving BUT she has a large glob of thick hard?? wax in the left ear (this is the ear that was infected). The wax is almost covering her entire eardrum, I observed this with the otoscope. Just showing off again gpm
. She complains only a few times of her ear itching - not much at all. soo how do you get the wax out. non homeopathic suggestions are welcome. I am thinking I could just put the hose of the vaccum up to her ear and suck it out- what do you think  just kidding. The wax is orangy/yellow/gold. normal color. her rash is getting better, not red but still there a litttle, but better. Still itching a little - I did give a dose of sulph200c the other day. barb

Hi Barb,
What a nifty (too young to know that word, are you?) time for trying ear candling. I have never known anyone who has actually done that, so here's the chance for an experiment......maybe not such a good idea on such a dear little victim. Was going to suggest warmed olive oil but candling sounds so interesting. Almost anything/nothing would be better than the vacuum. (When you grow a tad older, Barb, maybe you will learn how to spell vacuum! ) Good luck to the little lady.

Barb, the model I have is #5211 from American Diagnostics, www.adctoday.com
It may not be the greatest, since I can't see anything with it! Going to the site, I see they have a vet specula! This was a gift and must not have realized there is a special specula for vet use.....oh good, I'll get the vet special. Thanks, this worked well for me. I didn't know and if you hadn't asked, still wouldn't and would always think it was my fault. When, keeping my fingers crossed, it's the specula that's at fault! (Maybe.) Let us know if you candle the poor kid. I've wanted to do the cats but can't figure how to not burn them up in the process

not sure about ear candling - a friend of mine did this when there was an infection and it made it worse. i think it would depend on whether the infection is cleared up.
you can try using olive oil twice a day. boil some water and put a teaspoon in the water until it is warmed. then pour olive oil into the warm spoon and allow the warmth to dissipate over the oil. then pour in the oil. this tip i found in one of miranda castro's books. |

WEll BArb,
IF nothing works, get hold of something called "Soliwax" or "waxsol" from the local health food store (At least that's what its called here. IF you'd like a list of the ingredients [sigh] email me). ITs a mixture of chemicals that softens the wax. You need to put a couple of drops at least 3-4 times a day for a couple of days. Then syringe out the wax with warm water - you need to probably get to an ER to do that effectively. Please don't try anything inserted into the ear. You stand a good chance of damaging the eardrum. Some wax can be very stubborn aand really stuck to the drum. warmly, doctorleela

GPM,
You're difficulty with the otoscope could probably be that the light is not focussing well into the area you're looking at. I can't imagine any other reason why you cannot see anything. I'm sure you're very familiar with the outer ear anatomy of most of the animals you look after. Tell me what. doctorleela

Dear Dr. Leela,
How are you? Thanks for the help. I will get the specula attachment that is for vet use and see if that makes the difference. Hadn't known there was one specifically for vet use. Three sizes came with the otoscope but not the "vet" specula that is also available for this scope. The light is adjustable, just that my eyes may not be! (A bad seamtress always blames the needle.)
